i know someone who has a old mercedes s320 which has not been started in years, battery is dead. they have stuff they want to get out the boot but as the boot is electric and the battery is dead they can not open it. Plus it won't open by key and it gets better the battery is only in the boot. look online at jumping it from the front but could never do it so any ideas people

Why couldn't you jump it from the front? That normally works.

Hi, some times when batteries go flat their internal resistance is quite high, so when you hook up another good battery it tries to charge the flat one and the voltage drops too far because of the load. The cars electrics are taken from the power lead on the starter, so either take the lead from the back off or the supply wire for the car off and apply power to that so you can open the boot. Hope that makes sense!

The main key (the emergency bit you fold out of the fob) should open the boot if its the correct one! Been there and done it in the past, try giving a good squirt of penetrating oil into the lock as obviously they don't get used much, however you should be able to hook up a decent battery to the +ve lead to the starter and any earth if you can get under the bonnet ok.

Can you get access to the starter from under the car on this S Class? (doesn't say what model) I've helped a couple of people where this has happened. We put the +ve charger clip on the starter and the _ve on the chassis. Not sure why but doing the same with a jump-pack or jump leads didn't have the same effect, I expect it's something to do with resistance? Obviously, this required access to mains power close by so might not help in this case. We needed to leave the charger on overnight and on four different cars (moderns) the doors just unlocked with the remote after 12 hours or so of charging.

stick a charger on the points under the bonnet for a couple of days and then use jump leads from another car to start it. no way it wont start. Done this with my w210 when i didnt want to empty the car to get to the battery.
