Seeing the thread on the cars dragged from the water in Somerset (and fast-tracking to the scrappie I assume) got me thinking about cars which come within inches of death, but are then given a reprieve. I've got loads from the 'net which I could share, but am interested in others contributions too. From this very forum - An '88 Cav LXi which was actually reprieved as it sat up in the air, with a punctured fuel tank and was about to be weighed in: By the time the owner had got it back on the road: And this one is legendary, too - 35 years 15m deep in a lake, as the gearbox was faulty: And driving onto the podium to collect a 'rat look' award (with minimal work): Anyone else?

I found this at the back of a scrapyard after a tip-off. Bought it, towed it home Fixed it in under half an hour, ECU was fried and a garage had failed to repair it, and seemingly didn't know that it's only an injection ECU, not a tied in immobiliser, so I just fitted another one, checked everything else, started and ran fine. Full tank of juice and 8 months MOT still in play, and turned out it had also just had a full service. Served another four years before dying due to rust and engine failure.

And the story behind that Austin big seven. A few years ago I received a phone call from a lady I have known for several years, her new husband had this 'old rusty wreck' in his back garden that had belonged to his dad, the car was parked up in the 1970's, stripped in preparation for a restoration and that's where it stayed. o said I could restore the car but it was another year before I eventually got to see it, the trusty Volvo was put to use and it was dragged to my workshop. Two years later and a lot of hard graft I can see the light at the end of a very long dark tunnel But the story won't quite end there because last two weeks ago I collected this.......

It's another Austin big Seven found in a local lockup where is has sat for about 10 years, even rustier than the first one so I have used a few parts off it and its fate now awaits some paperwork from the DVLA.

1981 Austin Morris Princess offered for FREE as a brave restoration project or donor, destined for scrap most likely. Now very close to going for its first MoT since the late 90s. build thread1975 Renault 6 offered at scrap money along with some other cars and had been sat in a barn since 1993. Is presently getting sorted for an MoT and the engine is currently having the head rebuilt. Surprisingly solid little thing and should hopefully be back in use later this year. build threadMy only other scrapyard purchase is this 1979 Austin Morris Princess which was comprehensively rotten and has therefore been chopped up and used as a donor vehicle to save the red one above and my beige daily Princess. This car was not as good as it first looked. One day I'll find something REALLY interesting in a scrapyard and save it. One day.

Can't find a picture but in 1979 I was in Scotland and visited the Doune Motor Museum where they have a car that had been buried for 50+ years !
"Sunbeam 3 litre, 1913 A replica of the earlier French Grand Prix racers. This car was bought new in 1913 for the son of a Galloway family. When he was killed in 1914 or 1915, during the First World War, his mother ordered that the car be buried. It received its first Log Book in 1974, having been recovered after being struck by a plough. The engine was still free, and after restoration, the car went on to take part in hill climbs, including Doune, and other events."
Looked surprisingly good.
