The exhaust on my celica has rotted through, I just bought a 2nd hand stainless cat back pipe at the weekend. I tried to remove the old one where it bolts to the cat but the old nuts and bolts are totally rotten and crusty. They rounded off as soon as I tried to undo them.
I am left with 2 options.
1 Pay a garage to do it, nice and easy but I am skint
2 Cut the old nut and bolts out
For option 2, the only way I know to do it, is to get an angle grinder and grind the nuts flat then knock the remains of the bolts out of the other side.
Is this safe to do under a car? with showers of spark and with the fuel lines and fuel tank all within a couple of feet of where I am grinding.
Is there a better way to remove or cut the old nuts and bolts out?
I hope this doesnt sound a stupid question but I have never done anything like this before.

Can you get in with a hacksaw?, angle grinder should be fine though as long as you don't collect the sparks on top of a plastic fuel pipe

I would be perfectly happy angle grinding under a car and have done so several times. If they're not completely round though, the first thing I would try is plenty of penetrating oil, followed by a decent six-sided socket.

It's too tight to get in with a hacksaw. Even a grinder is a struggle, unless I go in with the grinding wheel at 90 degrees to the nut. I like the nut splitter idea.
***just got home from work and had a go with the grinder, making sure any sparks are away from the tank and fuel lines. I managed to get the back box and the mid section off. I just need to continue tomorrow and finish cutting the bolts where the remains of the mid section meet the cat. It hard work on the drive way though.

Grinding near fuel lines and tanks is not a problem if it is metal lines and tanks and there are no leaks, if plastic or rubber lines are nearby cover them.
Always wear goggles, gloves, ear defenders and hold the grinder with both hands and don't have the grinder switch on locked position you can't really go wrong.

Pretty much did what you said, wore all the safety gear and just did the grinding slowly, a bit at a time and made sure the sparks didn't go anywhere dangerous. I ground the nuts flat and the hammered the old bolts out and the mid section dropped out. The stainless mongoose exhaust that I got fits like a dream, everything lined up perfectly and it was very easy to fit. All sorted now, cheers for the advice.

Cutting disc on a dremmel works pretty well - It's a bit slower but you can get places you can't with a hacksaw or grinder.
