I'm considering getting a Porsche 944. I've wanted one for a lot of years, and I'm in the market for one. I'm not looking for a show winner, probably one that needs some work and tidying up in the region of about a grand? Maybe a little more? I'm really not sure what a reasonable one that needs work goes for.
I've heard they eat timing belts, but what about driveability? What's the pricing on parts like, such as exhausts, suspension components, service parts etc?
Most of the ones I've seen look like they are mostly 2.5s. What's a realistic mpg? Are they Injection or carbs?
Finally, stupid question, but do they have rear seats? Are they usable? I only ask as a friend has got a 928 and the backs are useless.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

So many questions. If you've only got a grand, then I'm afraid you've only gonna get dog rough examples for that....the parts alone are worth more than a grand so they are more likey to strip them for parts than sell them for that price. If you buy a cheap one, you will end up spending loads fixing it...yes parts can be expensive (even used spares).
I can't believe that you've wanted one for years and you don't even know how many seats they have? They are 2+2's by the way and the 928 has more room in the rear than a 944.
I would answer your other questions, but I think that this is not the car for you, sorry.

I've never really seriously looked at them, which is why I know nothing about them. All I've based my want from is seeing them on the road. There seem to be an awful lot of them on eBay for a start with about an grand to 1500. I understand that they will need some work but aside from welding ill do it all on my drive. I have ten years of working on hundreds of different cars, so that's not the problem. I was generally looking for your opinions on them, it would be useful to hear from an obvious Porsche enthusiast.
If I end up spending two, three grand on one then that's what happens, however I need to know if they're worth the money, wait and work.

I loved mine right till I rolled it, but even bent as a banana, it still drove onto the recovery truck. It's strength probably saved me from serious injury. No rear seats, fantastic looks, fairly simple mechs, great drive.
Buy the best you can afford, be cheaper in the long run and make sure it's got quality tyres in the correct size.

Yes they are worth the money, they are a great car and a great drive, but like andyborris said, buy the best you can.
I'll put a buyer's guide on here when i find the link. They do rust, so check the sills. What often looks like surface rust on the sills means they are rotten and need replacing.
If I was you, I'd find a local one for sale and just go and have a look at it, so you can check out how much room they have inside...The rear seats are really only for small children or very short journeys if an adult was to squeeze into them as there isn't alot of head room either.

Ive seen a few nice 944s and also one or two reasonable 924s, none of which local though. I'm not going to rush in but ive really only started seariously considering one in the last week or so. I'm currently working my way through some great threads on here, some of the cars look superb.
I'm not put off by the back seats so much, my kids are almost never in the car and if they are I'm sure i could wedge them in.

Small kids will fit in the back of a 924 or 944, no problem. Those over 5 ft tall will not fit (or enjoy it!). 1k will not get you a good 944, but it might get you a decent 924. The 2 litre cars are far cheaper to run than the 2.5 (and bigger) cars, as so many of the 2.5 parts are Porsche only. So don't discount the 924...

Yer 924 would be a good starting point and won't cripple you financialy and there are a lot about so you can pick and choose ebay danger a photo can make a car look 100% better than it does in real life especialy with the bucket of water trick I'd look on gumtree because a lot of people are shifting 'cheaper' cars on there because it doesn't cost as much and you don't get phantom bidders. Also join the club and do some google hunting for thing to lookout for good luck.
