Hi All ,
Any help at this stage will be most appreciated
I bought a vauhall senator recently and on the drive home (30 miles) it was fine . Once I pulled up it started to get warmer and warmer .
I then got a mechanic to look at it and I have changed the thermostate and Water pump under his advice .
It has not cured the problem .
I wonder if anyone knows any way of checking teh head gasket or other possible causes .
I have flushed it and put in anti freeze , and still no change .
the vicous fan is always rotating and the fan in front of this comes on at 105 degrees as expected .
please help
If i cannot solve it I will cut my looses and sell it for parts - which is a slight shame.
Any advice will be much appreciated
regards
Samuel

what engine? 24v?
The head gasket is gone on my 24v and its a massively expensive job to sort sadly so I'm binning the engine when it gives up altogether and going 3.0 V6.

Sniff test will tell you if the headgasket has gone (to cylinder) I believe most garages can do this.
I know a lot of people who have fitted new thermostats and they have proven to not work. Only way to tell if put them in a pan of water and heat them up. Is it only overheating when stationery or just after a long period driving? is it loosing water?

You checked the water pump shaft hasn't snapped letting the impellor just spin ?? An hour and 20 mins is a long time for a head gasket as usually they boil up after 5-10 mins usually if hg has gone ??
Worth checking pump impellor IMHO if its easy enough to do so
if the header tank has a small return feed (usually top of tank) take it off and hold the car at 3000rpm you should see a flow of steady coolant coming out if not possible water pump or airlock and at worst hg

I doubt that's a HG problem. Since you've fitted a replacement 'stat and water pump I'd go for a partially blocked radiator. Take it out, fill it with cheap coke overnight, then flush it and try it back in the car.

is it actually over heating (firing water out the top, steam etc etc) or are you going by what the dash is telling you?

Take it out, fill it with cheap coke overnight, then flush it and try it back in the car. Agree with this, sounds like the rad is partly blocked, meaning the fan can't do its job properly when the car is stationary but there's enough airflow through the whole rad (just) to cool it down when moving. Does switch the heater and blower on full make any difference? On some cars the heater is powerful enough to act as a secondary radiator (unless that too is partly blocked!), although on 3 litre Senator maybe not!
