Not sure if its still the case but in the past I have been told you shouldn't display display numbers on a road going vehicle unless taking part in a competition - if fitted they should be struck through with some black tape or something to avoid police retribution.... motor racing on the highway i think was the offence

Foxtons had their fleet of 10 million Mini's with racing roundels zipping around London for years. Anyway, my opinion.....if it is what you think you will like, play around. The MX-5 is a fun, likeable car and I'm sure if somehow achieved with some sense of humour it could work. Just put 'Racing MX5' into google images and there are loads of examples that may help inspire or put you off.... |

You can legally run race numbers, but you're likely to get a stern ticking off/fine/disqualification from the MSA/competition organisers if they're real race numbers, as in they were issued for actual competitive use, rather than just being decoration. Personally I don't think they'd look bad on that little MX-5 if done right. It's sort of standard enough for them to just look like a bit of fun, rather than looking like you actually think it's a racing car. |

Agree, there are no offences for displaying numbers on road vehicles.
This misconception comes from the Motorsport rules governing use of road legal vehicles being used on the public road between stages etc.
I used "118" on my car until recently!

IF you hold a competition licence and you are not on an event you MUST blank out the numbers.
Regarding your question, why not?? It's your car, if you like the look of it go for it!

Your car, your rules, if you want to put a fake breast with tassels on each headlight pod and make the motors jiggle the tassels, do it, but it might make you look like a bit of a breast yourself, (except at certain social occasions where this would be perfectly acceptable). If you like the idea of numbers, stick 'em on.

If by background you mean a '60s saloon racer style plain circle, then I'm with you.
My car is a light green colour, and i've often toyed with putting a big white circle on each door.
Not so sure about the numerics themselves, but your madza would look "spot" on (seewotididthere), with a big black circle on each side, and one in the front corner of the bonnet, half over a headlight. Maybe.

There could well be as they assume that because you have race numbers you will drive your car like a race car, it could also make it more prone to theft as a race car will have ungraded engines and other expensive kit fitted. |
