I bought this car about 18 months ago with the intentions to get it restored and minted as they`re worth about £5k when done, and are going up in value each year. However, it has barely been started. The story is it went into ItalAutos, who were a local Alfa specialist in Chesterfield to get it started and all the welding done. I paid the chap £600 up front to do the job, and 3 months later I show up to his unit to find he has cleared off, owing lots of people a shed load of money. My Alfa was sat outside, looking sorry for itself. I then find someone else to do all the work, transport the car to his unit 100 miles away. 6 months later, it`s not been started, and has acquired a cracked windscreen and a smashed wing mirror. I then picked it up again, and it`s been sat at the back of my unit ever since.
Make no mistake, this is a project for someone. It needs welding,, as do most Alfas of this vintage. The bodykit has been stripped off in preparation. I bought two new outer sills (pattern parts) from Italy. These have been partially fitted, but will need finishing/refitting. The boot floor will need fabrication, and both footwells will need welding. Both rear arches are gone too, so these will either need pattern parts ordering, or fabricating. A couple of small holes, about an inch square on the rear quarters too. I have had a quote of £400 to get the welding done in the past.
It will also need starting. I knew the chap who I bought it off, and he drove it into storage. When I collected it, it wouldn`t start. The fuel in the tank was stale. It will need a new fuel pump and an air flow meter. I had it started from a separate can, but it instantly died each time it started. My guess is the K&N that`s on it has burnt out the AFM.
To make mint, it would also need a respray. However, this is totally up to the new owner. It would look respectable with a good polish, but my train of though was if it`s having the sills, rear arches etc painted, I may as well do a proper job and get the whole thing done. It`ll obviously need other small bits and bobs like a front carpet section where some butcher has just cut it to access the floor and a driver door wind deflector.
The good bits though, is that I believe the engine to be in very good fettle. As I mentioned, I know the previous owner, and he wouldn`t lie to me about this. It has a recent Harvey Bailey handlig kit, inc Koni suspension etc. It has 15" anthracite revolutions, all with very good Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres. 1 loses pressure, so would either need a repair of the rim sanding down. It`s a genuine Veloce with the wide arches etc.
It`s obviously not got MOT or tax. It`s showing around 120k I believe, with a good service history and full book pack. It will need to be taken away on a trailer.
As I was getting sick of people messing me about with this, I was considering turning it into a track toy. However, It`s now looking like I`m going to be getting a Volvo 244 T5`d, which is something I`ve always wanted to do, so that`s why the Alfa is for sale. It owes me a lot more than double the asking price. In fact, it wouldn`t be far off treble what I`m asking when I take into account the lost money I`ve given to Italautos etc. It would need someone who can see past the sorry state it is in now, and see what this car could actually be. If you can do the work yourself, you could well be onto making a good lump of money off it.
This is as it was when I pulled it out of storage;
These are a few examples of how the rust is now;
This wheel arch looks solid, but it`s full of filler
Boot floor/spare wheel well
The more I look at these pictures, the more curse word off I get at both people who have had this car. The first one for ripping me off, and the second one for not taking car of it for the 6 months they had it and making it worse.
I`ve shown the worst of all the rust so anyone who might be interested is under no illusions of what is required. It`s still worth doing in my opinion. If I don`t get the money I need for it, I`ll just mothball it until I`m a little less annoyed and then probably start again with it.
