Found this the other week at a general car auction. Looked alright but had a very short MoT on it, so thought I'd take a punt. Got it home and put it through a test and it failed on only minor items (few electrical gremlins, exhaust falling off and the handbrake low being the main ones). Fixed all those so it now has 12 months test.
It's a 1300 (so good for insurance)and also has tax until the end of October, with just 72k on the clock and that is backed up by a folder full of receipts and old MoTs (I think they are nearly all there going back to its first one).
The shell is rock solid. I can see no signs that it has ever been welded and it needs none. The rest of the bodywork is pretty good with a few rusty patches showing through. The worst of these is on the driver's side as shown in the pictures but there is a tiny bit on the arches and rear valance too, with a very slight dent in that as well. Overall the appearance is very nice and the paint has polished up well. The only other thing I note is that the doors have dropped a little, but this is common on Golfs as far as I know. They shut in place with a reasonable slam.
As you can see it has BBS alloys, and these have almost brand new tyres (Ling Lings whatever they are!) and it's been lowered right down with a suspension kit with the damper units looking very new. This gives an 'interesting' ride, which I'm sure is enjoyable for the younger driver but as I'm in my 40's and Gloucester is plagued with speed bumps, it really isn't a good way too keep my dentures in place. The steering is straight, which I was surprised at considering the drop, but it does tramline like a bastid!
The engine starts on the button, warms up well and will sit ticking over with no overheating. The car also drives fine and I've done about 50 miles with no obvious problems. Being really picky you can here a few rattles and creaks every now and agin, but that's probably more down to the harsh ride than anything else, and I'd say the engine mounts are probably a little on the soft side as the engine does rock a little on taking up the power. Brakes are OK, all the lights and electrics now work.
Inside is pretty good too. The seats are unripped and carpets nice. The dash is very minorly cracked, one speaker cover was broken so I took it off and one nice thing is it comes with the original stereo blanking plate, which must be a rare item. With a good clean it would be an excellent interior. The aerial is electric too and works.
Can't think of much more to say, but feel free to ask questions. At the price asked, I'm basically asking for my money back plus a few beer tokens for having spent a couple of days working on the car. I'd say it's a perfect starter classic due to the low engine cc and has room for a bit of improvement and further mods.
