Just signed up, but spend a lot of time reading and admiring readers cars on here. I'm starting up a catering van and have chosen a Bedford Debonair camper... At the moment its in my friends workshop and he's stripping out the inside with a view to lift the body off.. The reason for the body off is a chassis upgrades, engine, brakes suspension etc. Now what I want help with is engine ideas, the only stipulation is it must be an automatic so what do you reckon folks?

Nice van.
Lexus Ls400 V8 would be a good call for petrol
BMW 525TD/Omega 2.5td would be good for diesel

Are you going to need to run the engine whilst working or get power from a portable generator?

8v 2-litre Vauxhall/slushbox from a dead Carlton. Keep it simple, keep it GM, keep it cheap. 115bhp means you won't be struggling for power, and you won't be shovelling half the day's takings into the fuel tank.

If you're using it as a catering van and travelling from place to place flogging food and running appliances etc, I'd go for a 2.0 TDI (138hp) from a B7 VAG. A V8 catering van would be awesome but your takings would just fuel the van.

It depends how you drive it with a fuel injected closed loop v8 would only fuel what the van required but would achieve its cruising speed a lot quicker than a smaller engine . My camper with a 2.3 t5 volvo lump is better on fuel than the 2.5 diesel as I don't need to spend an age climbing up to motorway speed .
