Took the day off work to change the clutch on my MX5 today and after only several hours of grunting, swearing and getting rust in my eyes I managed to remove the clutch and flywheel (was going to get the flywheel lightened while it was apart) only to be greeted by this - Turns out it's already lightened - to 4.8kg! (think the standard 1.8 flywheel is over 8kg) but am pretty worried by state of the face and the discolouration from heat buildup. Just want to know if it's safe/sensible to use or whether I should look out for another one. The snag being I kinda need the car back together for Monday as it's my wifes daily... Any experienced advice greatly accepted!

Is that cracking in the metal or is there somehing on the faces?
That heat build up doesn't look great though

Yes, that's lots of little cracks on the face of the flywheel. The outer edge is ok though - the dark lines round the edge in the first pic are just dust.

I was due to have it lightened and balanced tomorrow morning at a machine shop so I might just take it along and see what he thinks...

Then it's knackered. Looks like someone has lightned it too much and the heat has got to it and cracked it

It's certainly ruined but I'd take it along to have it looked at. I'm guessing that the old clutch was working fine before it came apart and if so would assume that the damage was done when the clutch before burned out big time and, despite the damage, the flywheel was reused. Not a great idea to have a heavy, highly loaded spinning mass with loads of crack in it!
Good luck, I'm sure a replacement will be easy to come by.

Bin it mate ,have you ever seen a flywheel implode ,I have and kid you not its not nice at all mate ...... Took my bulkhead out and also my gearbox too

Looks pretty normal, as long as the sirgace is flat itll go again.

Chuck it out mate,Slip down to the wreckers and get another one.If it's your ladies daily,it doesn't need lightning anyway.

Yes, looks very similar! Just got back from the machine shop and the guy (Rob Walker Engineering nr Witney, Oxon) reckoned it will be ok to reuse - not dangerous but may end up with a slipping clutch if the face is gone but the old clutch was not slipping so am going to reuse it despite my misgivings as I need it back together ASAP. Metroman, I think you're probably spot on about it having been cooked with a previous clutch and reused with a new one. It looks like a forged steel one rather than the standard cast affair - I certainly wouldn't be putting it back on if it was a cast standard part that had been lightened that much!
