I've had lots of cars that made a hissing sound when the fuel cap was removed (as if air was rushing in to the tank). I'm pretty sure my current Golf MK2 does it, and that both of my E30s and my E28 did it. I've never really given it a thought. Am I missing something? Looks a bargain by the way, GLWTS.

WTF, are you mad? There's nothing wrong with that car, tons of cars hiss when you remove the cap, it's just caused by the expansion/evaporation or condensing/shrinking of the fuel, depending on the temperature..
Bear in mind that even a 0.5 psi vacuum over an area the size of a petrol tank will make quite a whoosh, venting though a 2 inch hole...
nowt wrong there, sure the tank vents/charcoal canister might be partially blocked, but so what if it it runs right it's fine, FYI the charcoal canister is by the spare wheel well iirc.. I can have a look at my 328i later..
