I need some help/ideas/advice, I recently took the head off the pinto as it still ran as a leaded head and needed the proper valve seats, having got it back from the machinists I put it all back together and it fired up. On the first test drive I went probably 10 miles-ish before she started kangarooing. I limped back to base and yes the tappets were tighter than a tight thing. They were re-adjusted with a little extra space, the points were checked and again everything was good, in fact I've never felt it to be so smooth until, after about 10-ish miles again...kangarooing. I limped back a ways and ended up being towed, again. It's back at the garage awaiting Monday morning. So, any ideas why they would keep getting tight? I've had enough at the moment and am contemplating shoving my pride and joy in a shed and getting some piece of curse word car for people who don't like cars... Help!!!

Kangarooing is usually fuel-related, no? Engine bay heat causing fuel evaporation? Is the mechanical fuel pump properly tightened-up? Have you checked the carb for debris which might clog the jets?
Are you setting the tappets at cold? Setting them while the engine is hot will give different results.

Everything is as it should be, the only thing I haven't done is set them warm as by the time I realise there's a problem I now can't run the engine. Maybe once they've been adjusted today I'll run it in the garage a while and re-adjust. Thanks for the help.

I mean, I think they're supposed to be set while cold (but anyone who has worked on a Pinto more recently than me is open to correct me ). If you try measuring them while hot, I'd expect the gap to be less, so tappets are perhaps not the problem.

Yeah, looking into every possibility. Thanks chaps. Unfortunately I have to go away to work tomorrow and have had to hire a car as the capri is my daily. The good folk at the garage have got a week of diognosis time.
