I present to you the Melkus RS1000 - ![](http://www.seriouswheels.com/pics-2007/2007-Melkus-RS1000-Limited-Edition-Front-Angle-1280x960.jpg) ![](http://www.tuning-blog.net/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/melkus_1.jpg) ![](http://www.tuning-blog.net/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/melkus_2.jpg) ![](http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_a52JqjHfltQ/TFFY43M6CAI/AAAAAAAAAGY/cv1xLLwfO8E/s1600/800px-Melkus_RS1000_Heck.JPG) This is the Melkus RS 1000, which was produced from 1969-79. The car was powered by the remarkable 992cc, Wartburg 353 engine, which was tuned to varying degrees. The fastest of these, was the racing car version, which had a top speed of 130 mph (210 km/h) and 88HP. The more common, road version had a top speed of just over 100 mph (165 km/h). The car was mid-engined and rear wheel drive. There was also some cars fitted with a 1200cc version. Just 101 of these cars were built during their ten years of manufacture. Paul H

One thing i love about this forum, always something turns up that I've never heard of or seen before, Quite a looker too, particularly from the front, reminds me of a Porsche 718 a bit (although the rear side windows are a bit awkward looking imho), and a raspy 3 cylinder two stroke engine.. whats not to like ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

This is a product of the socialist German Democratic Republic (GDR), which makes it even more remarkable! It was not available for anyone to be bought, you had to either be a racing driver or have some very good relations with high figures of the government ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) It never was sold to the public, you had to have a race licence to be able to buy it. And whilst delivery for a Trabant took over 10 years, this was delivered in a half to two years! If you got one though - you had THE Ferrari equivalent of the GDR. Whilst Jane, John and Bob Doe still had to wait some years for theyr Trabant ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Melkus had a brief return in 2009, when they announced the RS2000 - the modern successor of the RS1000. Though they went bankrupt in 2012 and had to cancel production. Which is sad, since it is a brilliant looking thing! Just like the first Melkus ![](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/ec/RS_2000.jpg/800px-RS_2000.jpg) ![](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c9/Melkus_RS2000_circuit_2.jpg/799px-Melkus_RS2000_circuit_2.jpg) Apparently it's based on the new Lotus Europa...

The RS2000 reminds me very much of the Lotus Elise
