Erm......?  Not enrirely sure why.... surely a benz-benz swap would have been FAR easier (something a-la Benzboy's project). Probably would use less fuel too than the notoriously thirst rotary... Still each to their own and top marks for effort!  |

Erm......? Not enrirely sure why.... surely a benz-benz swap would have been FAR easier I think you've answered the question yourself there. Swapping an another Merc engine wouldn't have been very suprising and "easier" is not neccesarily what some people are interested in. I'd bet with a Rotary in there it will be pretty unique. |

Well it's different! I saw a Merc E-Class with Toyota Supra engine and 'box... I think it was a car in Saudi Arabia or somewhere... Nice project, I'll bet there ain't another on the road! I think a Benz-Benz swap presents pretty much the same headaches though, unless you do an engine further up that particular model range. My main concern is creating enough space in the engine bay at the moment!  I'm a fan of same-marque transplants - I don't really know why, it just seems kind of...neater, somehow... Great project though! Hats off to the guy! ;D |

I know what you mean about same marque swaps. I wouldn't even conside putting a non Nissan engine in any of my Datsuns but it's fine by me if other people want to do it ;D I just wouldn't want to own it.
The way I see it...if say, my 510 had a Toyota engine in it...it wouldn't be fast because it was a Nissan anymore... and that just feels wrong.
It's a bit diffent with more common cars like Fords. A cossie motor into an Escort has been done, plenty of times ... so therefor fitting a rotary or something would make for a more interesting swap IMO. I guess with an old fintail Merc, ythere aren't that many with engine swaps (well here anyway) so it wouldn't matter what you put in it..it's still be unique!

On the Serious Performance 6 DVD theres a Merc of a similar age in aussie with a rotary in it. Except its one of the bigger ones that came with a V8 in it Rotary don't make it any faster. The only real difference is the noise |

I didn't realise those rotary lumps were so compact! Now I see why they're quite popular. I saw a Mazda V6 engine the other week which was about the size of a regular 4 pot! (I think it was in a Ford Probe... they're Mazda based, right?) Could fit under most bonnets... I'm thinking Mini V6.... oh now I'm building it in my head!..... |

I take it you're on about the 1800cc V6 as fitted to the MX-3? Not only is it a really compact lump, but it's pretty bloody pokey too!  Shame really, as while the MX-3 looks like it should do the biz, I found that it handled like cack....(or maybe it was just my driving)...any which-way I nearly biffed it into a ditch! |

Yeah, I assumed it was the same 6 pot as from the MX 3. Although didn't the Probe have a 2.5 V6? Not really sure...could be based on the same engine but I remember Ford and Mazda being in cahoots on the Probe (isn't it badged MX 6 aswell?)
1.8 V6!? That must be silky-smooth! ;D

I don't think the 2-5 in the probe / mx6 was the same as the mx3: As I recall, the MX3 motor had a very narrow angle to the Vee, so that it would work efficiently as such a small capacity 6-pot...can anyone confirm?

yes The MX3 had a narrow angle 1.8 V6
The angle was so narrow it only had one cylinder head
Not sure whats in the MX6/Probe though
