Have been suffering of late from a complete lack of mojo in regard to cars (for for the last year or so really :x) got it back a bit now, but still want to get a bit of motivation for my beetle project which i should be retrieving from my parents house soon It’s going to be built in the style of the bugs that i dreamt of owning as a kid reading volksworkd and custom car etc, what got described as 'cal look' in the 80's and 90's in the UK, but would better be described as cal custom or something, you know the look, usually dechromed lowered and with either painted stock VW wheels, aftermarket empi’s and the like or alloys from various makes and models of car, (Saab Peugeot 205 etc) Something along these lines, so lets see some

I love the small screens on the ovals, looks like it's already been chopped! Despite running a Ford and Bedford, my past was in VW's and a Squareback is still my holy grail, damned sexy vehicles.

Correct me if I'm wrong but only one of the above is cal look I'll correct you, you are wrong . What there is above is what is known as UK Cal Look, it was an early 90's interpretation of Cal Look before VWs were as much of a thing as they are now. It is sort of crossed over with the Back 2 '89 (B289) style, but without so much of the custom flair of people like Thump Thump. Until the revised (and probably more correct) version of Cal Look made it as prominently to theses shores this is what constituted Cal Look On the left of that photo is Keith Seume who literally wrote the book on Cal Look giving away the Custom Car magazine Cal Look build.

I put together my '59 looker "Mint Humbug" over '86/'87 and I guess, at the time, it pretty much epitomised "British Cal-Look". I built it as Colin Burnham was building the Street Machine red project bug and when we first went to VW shows we were pretty much the only two Cal-Lookers amongst a sea of stockers, bajas, buggies and customs.
