Morning all. This is an itch I`ve wanted to scratch for a while, and have decided to look into it a little more this week.
Has anyone on here imported any cars from the US recently? I`m thinking of bringing one or two over, but have never done it before, and am looking for a starting point etc. I`ve imported from Japan on a number of occasions about 10 years ago, which was pretty straight forward. Literally pay for the car, pay for the shipping, wait a while until it lands, pay import duty etc and VAT, register in the UK and away you go. The main difference is, in Japan you have many agents who will act on your behalf at the auction houses. They also help out with storage, transport to the docks etc etc.
I don`t know if it`s the same type of set up in the US, or whether you have to source the cars yourself from eBay, free ads etc. Also, with regards to the logistical side of things, the US is far more vast than Japan, so I`m guessing transport to the docks will be costly, and vary quite a bit. Are certain states better to buy from than others, both with regards to quality of the vehicles and cost of transport. The UK inspection was SVA when I imported from Japan, now I believe it`s IVA. How different is this test, and are there certain years of vehicle that won`t be viable to import due to this?
I could go on forever with questions. If anyone has recent experience of doing this, and would like to share their knowledge, feel free to PM me, reply to this thread or provide a phone number so we can talk. I just want to find out the process from start to finish, including the best way to source the cars over there.
Cheers.
