A couple of weeks ago I put a speculative bid on the fleabay for a Lancia Beta 2L IE Coupe. I won the auction and just went over to have a look at it - I was expecting to turn up to view a pile of rust but amazingly this car is sound. Ok, it could do with a new bootlid but the actual body is fine. I'm well chuffed and hoping that once I can get it over to the garage I'll have it up and running and MOT'd within the next two weeks.
I was surprised at the level of refinements for a 1983 car, electric windows, 5 speed box, decent alloys. It's only a shame that I'm going to have to get rid of it so soon.
Anyway, like the title says - tell me more about the Beta.

I cant really tell you much except for rust, my brother had one a few years back and it went like stink, it had been lowered and went round bends like it was on rails, but this put stress on the body and the shocks nearly made their way through at the rear

Good Drivers car,but even the Superchargered Volumex didn't set the world on fire with 135 BHP As for the rust They were made from cheap russian steel,in exchange for Fiat building a plant there. Hence a very rare sight on our lovely salty roads! ;D

Rust, rust, rust, that's all I know about Lancia's hence my surprise about how sound this one is.
I've been on the Lancia owners club site - Jeez how you seen how much a good one goes for! ÂŁ3K+!
It reminds me very much of that recent Top Gear where they all said that they'd buy a Lancia but never recommend it to their friends.

There's only one place you really need to be concerned about looking for rust,
The big bit of metal between the front bumper and the back bumper ;D

Any left now must have been rustproofed when new or something. Mind you, my mum had one for a short period, 1976(R) reg saloon and this was 1983 so a few years old and not a spec of rot, although the head gasket went. Lancia got a bad rap for this whole thing but they handled it pretty well really, refunding 5 - year old cars and crushing them (a few monte carlos went that way as well) when BL, Vauxhall, Datsun, Fiat and everyone else really were making total rotboxes and showing no concern whatsoever.
Why are you getting rid of it so soon?
10 points and a special prize for anyone who finds me a Trevi Volumex!

I tried to buy a Trevi Volumex last year, unfortunately it got exported to eastern europe! Most annoying.
They come up on French eBay from time to time.

I'm getting rid of it so soon for two reasons both of which I was unaware of when I bid for it -
Firstly we found out that my dad has terminal cancer and so I am selling off my entire fleet of retro/classic cars so that I can spend the money on making these last few months as good as I possibly can for him.
Then yesterday I found out that my job is finishing and so I'm likely to be out of work for a little while. With the situation with my father this might not be such a bad thing but it does mean that I'll have to flog off a lot of my stuff to fund living.
I've been on the Lancia Owners club site and I'm impressed with the money that they are fetching so I might spend the money to get a ticket on it and then sell it on. It all depends if I get an offer before I start spending on it.

Found this on the web - There is one factory RHD Trevi Volumex (I know I said otherwise above, but I was lying ), which was built originally for the Italian Embassy in Pakistan, before eventually being brought to the UK. It's owner is unlikely to be putting it up for sale in the forseeable future ! In addition, a small number of LPG powered Trevi Volumexes were sold. One special version of the Trevi was produced, the Trevi bi-motore, fitted with two Volumex engines, one under the hood driving the front wheels, and one at the back driving the rear wheels (with large air scoops fitted to the rear doors). The two gearboxes were linked together, and an electronically controlled throttle replaced the mechanical system to allow the two engines to work together. The car was used as a testbed for the tyres being developed for high performance rally cars (specifically the Delta S4). ;D ;D

Mine's the IE, injected model, not the Supercharged volumex. Lancia claimed 122bhp for it when new - I wonder how many of those horses have since escaped?

The bad rust rep came from the series 1 Betas being re-called due to the sub-frame mounting points rusting away. The series 2's didn't have that problem so they just rusted like any other car of the period.
