I need to send my v5 off to be updated as I've changed the engine from petrol to diesel. I've heard easiest thing to do is to get a garage to write the details out on headed paper and send that off but I don't know anyone round here who would do it. Anyone run their own garage who wouldn't mind doing it for some beer tokens? Cheers.

Just send it off, they'll either change it or send you letter saying you need to jump through hoops, in which case send it off again

That doesn't work any more. I'm going from a 1.4 petrol to 1.7 derv so tax class is different too so can't see them just doing it. Even got to send the tax disc off to Swansea with it as you can't do it at the post office anymore and our local dvla office is shut down. Got my mot on the 19th of March so need it sorting ASAP really.

Do you have the V5 for the engine donor ? If so send a copy of that together with the V5 that need amending.

Yes I do. I think I'll still need a letter from a garage too though. Think I might just knock one up on the laptop tbh. Cheers guys.

Yes you will need a garage letter if there is a taxation change involved, any VAT registered garage should be able to do a letter for £20-30. Is it really worth saving a few quid by faking letter?

We'll I'm not going to pay a garage 30 quid for 5 minutes work that's for sure. Do you really think the dvla are going to ring every garage up to check? As long as they've got the right paper work In front of them it'll go through fine. It's not like I'm going down in tax class either and be saving money. I'm going up so costing more.

What about the place that you go to for MOT ? You could print out a standard letter along the lines of "I confirm that engine number xyz123456 has been fitted to [name of car] ABC 123" and ask tester to check the numbers then put the garage stamp on the bottom of the letter in exchange for a few quid, big box of biscuits for staff room, 6 pack of beer etc. BTW I'm assuming the vehicle is pre March 2001 reg ?

Yeah it's a 1995. I'm pretty friendly with our mot man as I take all the family's plus afew mates cars there but when I asked him other day he mumbled something about not wanting to get involved with dvla and not having time. Garage at top of street won't do it as you can't see last few numbers on the block even though you can see the rest ok and I've got the donor cars v5. I'm going to try another place tomorrow and if they won't do it I'll knock one up myself.

The DVLA don't check every one but they do random checks.

I've be tempted to do a statement along the lines of " I confirm that I changed the engine from petrol [number) to diesel [number] and include a copy of the donors V5 along with the recipient V5 for amendment" and send that off to see what happens. Make the statement in a letter type format and you might get that accepted without getting a garage involved. This is what I'm going to do when I change the engine in my Marlin from 1800TC to 1275 Sprite as I too am reluctant to pay a garage for a letter without trying myself first.

Make the statement in a letter type format and you might get that accepted without getting a garage involved. This will almost certainly work, and if they reject your letter it just send it back in again. They don't seem to keep records of what requests were made and rejected for each car or record so it's common for one DVLA employee to knock something back only for another to accept it. This is based on real world experiences with a petrol to diesel conversion on a T25 and Landie engine swaps.
