i already have this- 3.5L 9.35:1 from an sd1. cammed offenhauser 360 manifold, holley carb mallory dizzy lightened flywheel blockhugger headers, which I'm swopping for some stainless RR p38 ones. billet pulleys and brackets lt77 5 spped manual box, new clutch, master and slave cyls, ive got everything for it. when that goes bang, ive got a supra box. do i use that, or go for a 4.5L merc v8 and adapt the supra box to fit? i like the whole merc in a merc thing, but i have no idea which is the better v8.....

The Merc wins everytime! It offers more power out the box (think the 5L does 260ish bhp)
I'd buy a shonky Merc of t'bay, pull the engine and sell the bits of the car and it will actually pay you! I'd also keep the Merc Auto box as there one of the best!

Couldn't agree more. Merc in a Merc is better - find a 560 SEC with Manual box and drop it in (240bhp).

Depends how much room you've got - the Merc is a wide 'ol thing compared to the Rover, plus there are limited tuning options for the Merc engine.
Of course, the Merc engine will make more power straight out the box whereas that 3.5 you've got there will make about 160-180BHP if it's in good health but with the external dimensions of the larger Rover lumps being the same, you do have the potential to upgrade to say, a well-flowed 3.9 which could make 250BHP without having to spend a fortune.

Leccy fan and free-flow would bring a W126 lump above 250bhp, no worries. And parts for it are dirt cheap.

No I didn't mean it like that I'm not that clued up on Merc parts supply but I was thinking more along the lines of aftermarket lifter kits, cams, forged pistons, uprated ignition systems, free-flowing heads, ARP bolt sets and so on - all stuff you can pick up off the shelf for the Rover. Then again, you probably wouldn't need any of that for the Merc Is there much of an aftermarket following for these? (sorry to derail the topic slightly but it's a learning opportunity and is relevant to the convo ;D)

Jesus, no. Not a J motor in a Benz! I guess those light, reliable, high power, infinitely tunable engines really don't belong in German cars

Merc manual boxes are the worst things ever, i reckon i get more feel for a change in my forward control Commer! Genuinly these things are one of the worst boxes available, there's Auto's however are a fine piece of kit

There was never a manual box for a w126 v8 - some early 280's and 300's 6-pot were available with manual, but never a v8. Merc manual box is not strong enough for a v8, certainly not 560 - would be interested to know how difficult an adaptor plate for supra box would be tho... UK spec 560 117.0xx engine is 299bhp but more importantly about 340ft/lb of torque :InsertBigFatGrinSmilieHere: - it's the 420 that has 240bhp.

If anyone is doing a w126 v8 engine swap, I have an excellent set of circuit diagrams which are very easy to follow...

The old 3.5 and 4.5 Merc lumps are heavy b@stards because of the cast iron block. I was going to use one in my Benz, but I've since had a rethink and am looking for something else - weight was one issue, plus the ol' time factor as it needed some work. If you're gonna go Merc-powered, it's perhaps better to start off with a later ally block 380 / 420 / 500 / 560, like ^that lot^ say. Still, the 450 makes 217bhp out of the box and plenty of torque. There's still the little purist in me that likes to see same-marque engines in cars... dunno why, I've never been fully able to silence it! A Supra lump seems to be a popular swap over in Dubai and places like that.
Cams are available from Schrick, but cost an arm and a leg.
Like 2002gimp says, merc manual boxes are shat. I've got a 4 speeder in mine and don't like it.

Soz Christoff, not sure what I was thinking - have just written it was 299bhp for work! God I hate being wrong about Mercs...
HW - How does a Koenig twin turbo kit sound? Or perhaps a Koenig supercharger? Maybe Renntech cams?
