For sale here is my/our classic Saab 900, flat front single carb, 1985 or it could be early 1986, I can't remember without looking at the V5, but it's C reg. 4 speed.
MOT until May this year (I think). Tax will get refunded or the buyer can have it at cost if desired.
First the bad, the nearside rear top shock mount has failed - a known problem on these cars - meaning that it needs immediate welding. I haven't inspected the break much but there is fresh metal showing, so I suspect that the shock has gone stiff rather than the failure being entirely due to rust, though I can't promise anything! As you can imagine, having no damping on one side at the rear makes it a bit squirrelly over bumps, and frankly borderline unsafe... so you can drive it away but entirely at your own risk. Having said that, I drove it to Manchester and back last week (thinking the problem was a minor break at the top of the spring) and survived.
First a picture so you can get the idea... (sleeping toddler not included in sale)
Since I've started the bad I might as well finish it:
* Arches have surface rust; set of chrome trims included but they need preventative treatment before being covered up
* Heater control valve not working - replacement valve included in sale. You might get hot or cold air in the cabin depending on how the car's feeling.
* Standard classic 900 headlining (dropped and stapled back in)
* Some rust in corner of boot floor which has been badly repaired (curse word garage which I won't use again) resulting in some water ingress and a slightly damp smell.
* Bonnet catch temperamental (will open fine, but may or may not latch closed. Due to sticky control wire, probably an easy replacement)
* Choke is slightly misaligned with the switch for the choke light, so the light stays on even when the choke is closed.
* At least one tyre will need replacing for the next MOT
* Dash clock doesn't work
And now the good -
* Rock solid single carb engine with a bit less than 104k on the clock - starts first time every time
* Recent plugs, oil and filter change
* Recent new clutch slave cylinder and release bearing
* Recent new tyre, probably less than 1000 miles on it
* Lovely wheel trims which are hard to get hold of nowadays!
* The comfiest interior known to man
* Recent new alternator
* Paint in good condition apart from aforementioned arches and boot lid is flat, but will T-cut with no problem (if I have time I'll do this) - generally it looks very smart.
* Will come with HBOL, original tool kit in the boot, spacesaver with almost new tyre (moulding bits still on it), jack, set of new NGK plugs and a set of alloys; alloys would benefit from a refurb but these early 900s have an obscure PCD (I think it's 4 x 114.3, not 4 x 108 as the later 900s do) so I stocked up on an extra set of wheels when I was planning on refurbing the steels, which of course I never got round to...
Overall it would make the basis of an excellent classic daily driver with the required welding done, and the value of these early cars should justify the work. I dare say it would be more lucrative for me to get the work done and sell it with a fresh MOT, but frankly work and family life is just far too busy for this given the fact that we were already thinking about trading it in for something more modern and boring, plus I have two BXs to work on already. Equally I could break it up, sell the bits and weigh in the rest, but I really don't want to do this if I don't have to - we have loved this car and it's been good to us. We even took it with us when we went to live in France for a winter and it didn't miss a beat. So I'd like it to go to someone who will keep it on the road if possible, even without my rose tinted specs I think it's too good to scrap.
It's not offered anywhere else at the moment, if it doesn't go here it will go on ebay as is, then I'll look at breaking it, but I'm sure it will go on ebay.
