i have been asked to help fix a espace engine. the cambelt has snapped. does anyone know what needs to be done to get it running again. my mates dad is saying to do a complete engine swap. but i was thinking maybe just the head has been affected. any help would be great. oh its a 1995 2ltr TDI by the way. cheers

:)The very least it will have done is bent some valves. The only way to know if there's any more damage is to remove the cylinder head. I wouldn't go buying another engine at this stage.

:)Make sure the valves haven't damaged the pistons too much, slight marking is fine but obviously make sure they aren't holed or cracked. Damage to the camshaft, rockers, follwers ect. will be obvious as you dis-assemble it but make sure you remove the valves and check the guides carefully for cracks.

cheers. gonna be doing all the work on my day off on wednesday. i'll be checking every part for damage. i hope me & my mate can fix it just to prove his dad that you don't need to get a new engine if you snap a cambelt. he said its cheaper and easier!

Do you know for sure if this is an engine with valve/piston interference?

^^ it is and, in an espace, a head job is much easier than changing the engine...... but be prepared for a long slog, Its about an 8 hour job to a garage to remove, strpi, reassemble and reinstall a cylinder head on them! Also, cos its along way back and you will be leaning in all the time, book some chiropracticioner time for afters

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Whichever you do (change head or change engine) its a complete curse word to do i'm never working on an espace ever again after putting a new engine in one.
