George's private army by the sounds of it.... Now there's a thought. I'm looking for a couple of guys that can't be traced back to me for a little job I have in mind... Sounds like they've inherited the blatant f***wittery that infests the rail system here, now. How's this: our local TOC has ordered a complete new fleet of trains to replace the 'legacy' stock (that stuff that works reliably because we've knocked the bugs out)from Stadler. They are basically, super trams. Because most of the area isn't electrified, the 'rural' units carry a genset trailer to power them. All fine and dandy so far. Trouble is, no-one actually worked out just how much of the area is wired and how much isn't - so we now have hybrid supertrams with too small fuel tanks to complete the diagram.... errrr.... Oh and no-one thought about storing bulk AdBlu which degenerates onto saltpetre. That could get interesting..... Brilliant isn't it? It's not like railways are new or anything, but get some bright boys with an "ology" involved and it's like losing your virginity over and over again! Have you any stops near a petrol station? Issue the drivers with a 5L can.

F-wittery is not limited to railway building, aircraft manufacturers seem to have collected more than the normal amount of f-witts. Currently the shop stewards must be in a world of their own. They have forced management to reduce overtime payments. The management must be in hysterics, "no we don't want that much cash, only give the men 50/75% of that" Ttfn Glenn. Who is suddenly not available for overtime

Madam sounds an incredibly clued up individual, could she not organise a meeting for you and maybe the head of the railway with El Presidente to explain that it's just an extension and renovation of existing trackway to link up with the existing line rather than a new railway so it would be fine this time to use the original gauge rather than the new one?

Who is suddenly not available for overtime Yeah, you've gotta love shop stewards. I haven't spoken to one in years and, do you know, I haven't missed it a bit. Enterprising little buggers aren't they? As I said, we gave a "donation" but nothing like the amount quoted above and that was to speed up the release process, which would have happened anyway. I was talking to the convict last night at visiting and he told me that everyone treated him very nicely because word had got around that he had a White Guy looking out for him. Sometimes being a foreigner can be useful. We've tried that approach as there is actually some remnants of old track there from the nineties. Didn't work! To be honest, I'm thinking of an open letter on Linkedin. Social media worked with Goodridge, why not Duterte?

Well, as the release date approaches, we're doing a spot of stocktaking. It looks inevitable that, if we remain here, curse word will continue to happen and, as it originates from a Barangay Chairman, there's not a great lot we can do about it right now. It also looks like we've sold one of our houses here, so have a little cash to use. So, I'm house hunting. We have only a few requisites and they are:- Cheap Away from Tondo Big enough for me and Madam, the Girls, and Kuya to be comfortable Secure parking for at least two cars Furnished So far I can fulfil one to four, but furnished is a bit of a sticking point so far. Still, we may be able to negotiate that or, if the rent's cheap enough, buy some junk stuff to get us over the immediate future. One I've seen does the four beautifully; 5 beds, 5 loos, only PHP18,000 a month, so shy of 300 Quid, and secure parking for, wait for it, FIVE vehicles. Of course the crunch will come between furniture and that cheap Ford Falcon I was offered a while ago. Remember, the one with the 2.0L Toyota engine? Could be why I'm following the sleeping/living in a car thread so closely. Interestingly, it looks like the Chairman has a turncoat in his camp. As I write, a Barangay Kagawad, or committee member, is sitting in our kitchen getting all the documents together that we'll need to take to City Hall to effect Kuya John's release. In fact we don't have to do a thing, she's going to take care of it for us. This surprises me somewhat as, at the risk of causing offence, Filipinos on the whole are a fairly selfish bunch to anyone outside of family. So this has restored a little faith. The cost? A trip with Madam to a beauty parlour, is all. I can live with that.

Have you ever been there? The minute that a Filipina finds out she’s neither the apple of her beloved’s eye, nor the blossom in his oasis? Not only that, but she finds out at visiting time up the nick? There I am yesterday lunchtime, delivering vittles to the prisoner and exchanging friendly banter through the bars, when an absolute silence falls. Just along from us is a weepy girl who is trying to wrap her arms around her man, not easy when you can’t get your elbows past the bars, when in walks the “other” woman. Well to be fair, she could have been the “original” and the other the “other”, if you get me. I never found out. “Get out, get out!” says Kuya John and not being one to ignore sage local advice, I slip past. Just before it kicked off big style. Of course, being the Philippines, any fight is not limited to the original combatants, but everyone gets to join in. Next minute a herd of stick wielding Manila’s Finest are weighing in, trying to sort it all out. Several cracked heads later, I finished my spectator’s cigarette, and returned to visiting, stepping delicately around the blood. The visiting area is now much less crowded, but strangely, the cells seem busier Who needs live sports?

Nope, still free and clear. You don't catch me getting involved in prison riots, oh no. I was going to update earlier in the week but decided that five days of, “Kuya comes out today...Oh, hang on” would probably get a bit repetitive. So I’ve not bothered. Anyway, Kuya comes out today. So I’m told. Again. The wonders and mysteries of the Philippine legal “system” have to be seen to be believed. It seems that in order to stop the police getting a little spot of tea money and the accused walking free, which used to be nice and simple, they’ve been taken out of the release loop. Now this is done by City Hall which, obviously takes forever and opens you up to another six people all trying to get a bit of what the police previously had. This is not a process for a White Guy to involve himself in, as the mere sniff of European sets off Peso meters at 100 yards. So we’ve had a fleet of people traipsing backwards and forwards between the police station and City Hall all week, carting today’s required paperwork (and cash) back and forth. Kuya’s had to appear twice as well, for which the police charge a “Transport Fee” of PHP1,000 each time, so they still get their bit after all. As I say, Kuya comes out today...In fact Madam has just this second stepped out with a pretty grim expression. I think she's getting a bit fed up. Watch out City Hall! Still on the lookout for a house, but our sale here fell through at the last minute. Got another two looking over the weekend. There was something really important to ask...gimmie a sec. Oh aye. I got a call last night about three months work at Heathrow Airport, so I’ve fired a load of updated stuff off this morning, which brings me to my question: If it goes ahead, I’ll be looking for accommodation for the duration and, after too many years spent in them, I hate large and/or chain hotels. The last time I was working away from home in the UK, down near Swindon, I found myself a grand little boozer in a small village, which also had three letting rooms. Nice and comfortable, food was good and no need to worry about drink and drive following your after work tipple. So I’m looking for something similar, but obviously not near Swindon this time. Maybe more Heathrow-ish. Early days yet and I may be asking too much, but anyone got any recommendations?

He's home. Only five days late. It's more lethargic in the Philippines! To be honest, I have no real desire to work in the UK again but, a short break from Manila could be welcome!

Yeah, even with my fading UK geography, I'd worked out the Hoo's were a tad far from the Heath's Don't know if anything will come of it yet, but somewhere quiet and comfortable is a good start. Ideally across the road from a P38 breaker.

My in laws do air b&b a five minute walk from kings cross St pancreas if that's any good. You'd need to understand Irish though! After Tagalog, Irish is no issue but, there are two problems:- 1) I have a severe allergy to London. Honest, I come down with a bad dose of Northern.. 2) Madam would never get past the sentence in Wiki, "By the 1980s it was notorious for prostitution and drug abuse." Never mind that Harry Potter once caught a train there, I'd be dead. Thanks, but it really has to be out of London and the quieter the place the better. If it comes off George, I am sure I can find you somewhere suitable. I can be knocking on Heathrow's door in 20/25 mins from me so shouldn't be too hard... We could even go kebab hunting lol Hmm, kebabs. I'm dribbling already! Let's see if it comes off. Perhaps I should change my Mission Statement (currently it's, "Will work for Beer" which nicely alienates the ME market) to, "Will work for Doner."

1) I have a severe allergy to London. Honest, I come down with a bad dose of Northern.. I totally get this. I just wander around bemused by the crowds and traffic, complain about the price of everything (I mean a pint of bitter in my local is still 2 quid!) and wonder why I put myself through 4 hours on the A1 for this. My wife's best mate lives in Forest Hill and I hate it that much that I've decided they have to come to Leeds if they want to see us. The wife is welcome to get the train down there but I'm not going. The only reason I'll go now is if Leeds get to Wembley!

It's not just confirmed to you Northern folk, I'm a Southerner living just an hour or so from Londinium, and I hate going there, I always have! It's too busy, there's too many people, I have to slum it with the commoners on public transport as I can't drive my car there! I hate going there... It's noisy, smelly, congested, oh wait... I've got to go there today... DAMN!!
