right the mazda is the first car iv ever had with an oil pressure guage so iv no idea what it means.
it normally sits at 60 but i noticed today that when its idling (coasting or at junctions) it drops pretty quickly to 30. bout 5-10 seconds to drop. when the engine revs again it quickly rises back to 60. bout 3-5 seconds to go up.
is this normal? just thought id check since oil is pretty important for a rotary

I'd be happy with that! I've no experience of rotaries mind, but that would certainly be healthy for a push rod engine. The pressure will drop when idling simply because the pump gets less efficient.

My merc does the same, i've assumed that its a combination of the oil being thin once hot so the oil pump cant keep the presure up when turning slowly, and the oil pump being worn and not able to maintain the pressure at low revs. I'd have thaught that full oil pressure with a few revs and a drop at tickover would have been fairly normal.

Has the oil pressure changed from when you first had the car...ie has it got worse?

not a clue. i always remember it sitting at 60 most of the time. i must not have looked at it when its at idle speed. it shoots up to 60 again when the engine rises above idling speed.
i thought it might be ok since it seems to make sense, the less the engine is revving the less oil it needs. but i have zero knowledge of oil so i figured it best to ask

Zero at idle is ok, aslong as it goes up when you rev the engine.
My Oxford shows about 5 at idle when hot, and 30 when revving. I'm told this is ok, but not ideal.

Sounds like theres nothing to worry about on the oil pressure front! My 205 GTI oil pressure varies greatly. At idle on hot days or after a track session its almost at the bottom of the guage. Give it some beans though and it zips up the guage. As others have said, its simply because the oil is thinner when its hot and the pump isn't working as "hard".

mine (Rover V8) will idle at 20-30 then go up wards of 60 when revved. As Seth said it sounds healthy but check with a Rotary type person

Sounds find goafterboy - although the only way to be sure would be to check the owners manual that the value you get is in range (provided the gauge is accurate Rob - sounds pretty much like mine: When hot (water temp = oil temp, must re-label that sometime. And clean the throttle butterfly, again ;D)
