Has anyone used the Apollo Spraymate as reviewed by Practical Classics. Seems a cheaper and easier alternative than investing in a compressor, and space is an issue. I'm working in a garage that's just about big enough to get down one side of the car if the other side is against the wall.
They do the Spraymate for less than £100, or the Spraymaster 1200 or Spraymaster 1500. Nicer gun on the 1500 but it's over £300.
If you can get decent results with a sub-£100 Spraymate I'd go for one of those.

I've got a 1500. Nice piece of kit and as you say expensive. Mine was 110v & second hand but only used once. Still had to pay a decent amount for it as they are sort after. As you say the gun is nice but I don't know if worth paying the extra if the cheaper versions will do a decent job. I'll admit I use mine for fence panels, girders and such that don't need such good quality, as I've got a big compressor and decent guns anyway, so can't comment on how good they are with body finishes. Have you considered hiring if just for a one off job ?

Boyd - Thanks for the offer to post the CM review of them. I'll keep watch.
Paul H - I would hire one, but it's going to be a bit of a slow job as I don't get much time off work. And with family issues what time off I get often gets eaten up without warning. So I need something I can use whenever a spare morning comes along.

Hmm the plot thickens! I have Been told you use HVLP spray guns on small compressors. A small compressor would let me use an air wrench as well. For the cost of a decent HVLP system I could have a small compressor and a low pressure gun maybe?

I've got an Apollo Spraymaster and painted my old Anglia van in my garage twice with cellulose and it didn't turn out too bad either time imho. That's the garage I sprayed it in and I didn't even turn it round. It's filthy dirty in this shot of it.

I think you might struggle to spray with a HVLP gun on a small compressor. The clue is in the name "high volume" Quick look at the Machine Mart catalogue shows the HVLP guns seem to require 3hp compressor and a bit pointless having one with a small tank so you are back to large tank which you say there isn't enough room in the garage. What about a small tool type shed outside just to house a compressor ? Before I bought my Apollo 1500 I was impressed with a cheap and cheerful Earlex HVLP set up a neighbour was using to do a fence. Obviously fence preservative is different to car paint but principal is the same so don't dismiss other makes of HVLP. Paul H

I think the guy who suggested it said a smaller touch up type of gun. Some of them seem to use fairly low cfm. Our local paint shop suggested a small gun when I was last in there. tbh I know naff all about spraying so it's all new to me. Hence the HVLP system caught my eye. I looked at the Earlex 5500 which looks to have a better gun, but if I'm spending that amount I'd go a bit more for the Apollo 1500
If I put a compressor outside I think it would disappear pretty quickly.
