1982 Audi 80GL Auto 1.6 (B2)
Year: '82
Mileage: Just over 86,000 miles
Tax: 2 Months
MOT: 6 Months
Location: Hartland (15 miles from Bideford and Bude) North Devon
Price: £1350
Bought this in September last year with the intention of tidying it up and taking it to some shows this summer, but I have since decided to go to New Zealand and it's with a heavy heart I have to sell my 80 as it's not economically viable for me to take it with me. It has been a great car with only 2 small problems in the time I've owned it (distributor breaking and screw falling out of carburettor). Although i've had it for 5 months, I took it off the road during November and December as I was just driving to work and back and so used another car.
It's a 1588cc, 4 cylinder, 4 speed Automatic which is frugal enough on fuel if you keep it at 55/60 and is nippy enough if you come up behind the obligatory tourist doing 40 on the main road in the summer months.
Good Bits:
-One of the last 1.6 Auto B2's left in the UK apparently
-86k
-6 months MOT with 1 advisory in last MOT (slight blow in exhaust)
-2 months tax
-Decent bodywork and great looking paint, polishes up very well, arches look good and mostly rust free.
-Good tyres all round with just over 2k on them
-BBS replicas which look great, although if I'm being picky they do need refurbing as the lacquer is damaged on all 4 and there is very minimal kerbing on the fronts (not noticeable unless close up)
-Brand new distributor (£130)
-Car has covered just over 4k since 2008 (docs to prove)
-Aftermarket CD/Radio with surprisingly good sounding, genuine 80's front and back speakers. The rears are aftermarket.
-Seats are in great condition and all look and work as they should
-Engine pulls very well
-Recently had the carburettor tuned so it starts on the button and idles very well, cold or warm. It can run lumpy for a couple of minutes but it soon clears
-On the first startup of the day, I leave the engine running for 10 minutes before I drive it
-I use a lead replacement fuel additive every time I fill up
-I clean the exterior at least once a week
-Absolutely massive fuel tank considering its age, £20 takes it just above the red and I've never filled it right up as I'm scared it would bankrupt me
-It has been lowered but I'm not sure how much by. It doesn't scrape anywhere, and I live down roads with grass growing down the middle of them so that's saying something. I think it looks good at the height it is.
Not So Good Bits:
-Small carpark dent on drivers door, but otherwise remarkably carpark dent free
-A few small stone chips have recently appeared on the bonnet, they will need touching up before rust sets in.
-It has been resprayed at some point in its original colour, although the previous owner said it was before he owned it and it is a fairly good job. Not concours by any means, but you have to look very closely and know what you're looking for to notice (I am almost certain I could have got away with not mentioning the respray unless somebody who worked in the spraying/bodywork repair business came to view)
-The carpet has always been the thing I dislike the most about the car. It has been replaced at some point and is stained, faded and just looks awful
-The 80's aftermarket alarm doesn't work (surprise, surprise), but on extremely low battery it does go off for some unknown reason. Again could be an easy fix
-Central locking doesn't work, but again, on very low battery it does try to
-The car has electric windows all round (yes, even rears), although only the drivers side works. When I bought the car, they all worked fine so I would guess the electric motors are fine and it could be a case of doing some simple wiring if it bothers you.
-Grille has a hole where a stone went through it and the rear light has a small section missing and has done for years, although both these parts are easy to come by
-There is a patch of rust on the drivers door and boot which have been repaired and rust is starting to come through, although no bubbles but they will need attention if you want to keep the car looking as it does.
-The most immediate problem with this is one of the plugs has fallen out of the boot floor so it is beginning to rust and collects water, although it doesn't need welding yet.
-There is a small amount of vibration through the steering wheel when decelerating from around 60mph, I've had 3 garages look at it and they can find no problem and it doesn't bother me.
I would love to see this go to somebody with a garage and the time and money to look after it properly, my garage plans fell through so it hasn't been garaged since I've owned it (6 months).Turns more heads than pretty much every other car on the road wherever it goes as there aren't many b2's out there these days! I always get compliments on it and when I'm filling up I very often get old guys wistfully reminiscing about the time they owned one. Definitely the most solid car I've owned and it really does pain me to get rid of it, but I need to fund my travelling.
Will get some recent photos up at the weekend, this one was taken in November last year and it looks almost exactly the same as it did then, with a bit more lacquer peel on the wheels being the only difference.
