I took your advice nitemare and topped up the oil in the gearbox, transfer box and steering box. I'm using EP80/90 GL4 for these which is meant to be okay with syncro rings and GL5 in the axles because it's cheaper. Are there any better oils to use? Also I couldn't see where to top up the overdrive. I looked online but I've not been able to find anything. James sorry for not coming back sooner the overdrive filler/level dipstick can be got at under the centre seat, from the passenger side it's the nearest one on top of the overdrive, about 11/16-3/4 spanner needed from memory on the rear axle problem, i'd pull the halfshafts if your diff pinion bearing is shot to stop the rear wheels from continuing to drive it and creating further damage, just refill/overfill with oil to ensure the wheelbearings continue getting oil

Thanks chap, I managed to top the oil up from underneath. The centre seat has been replaced with a Defender storage box which is bolted down with about million nuts and bolts. As non were captive I decided to leave it alone! It wasn't too bad with a funnel.
The rebuilt axle is turning up on Saturday with a bit of luck so I think I'll just leave the axle as it is for now, it's only got to last me about 20 miles and most of that is at 10 mph.

Update time!
I finally got round to putting the new axle on the other week with the help of a good friend of mine. Not too bad a job in the end although the front two spring bushes were completely seized and did not want to come out. Much fire and hammering was required but we got there in the end. I then laid the springs on their sides and painted them with engine oil and let it soak in overnight before we put it all back together again with new bushes and bolts. When we came to bleed the brakes the line running from the front to the rear decided enough was enough and burst which was lucky - the only good time for a brake failure! The fix was simple enough and she's now back on the road running better than ever.
The only problem as that she's only running in front drive! Turns out that the Rover axle needs a slightly longer prop which I didn't realise at the time! If anyone has a 109 Rover type prop I'm happy to take it off your hands / swap it for a Salisbury prop and tired axle too if wanted.
No photos I'm afraid, sorry.
