Are s! After a 7 week wait, the V5C for my S60 has finally arrived. But there's a problem... Front page; Section 3 (Special Notes); 2. Non-transferable registration mark. Feck and more feck! Does that mean I can't take off the existing '53' plate and put my personal plate on (I've had it a few years and don't want to not use it)? The ovlov had a personal plate previously, I think...

I'm pretty sure that just means you can't put the current (53) plate on retention.

It's odd, I've never seen that before. But I also read it to mean you can't transfer that registration off the car, if you put a private plate on then your existing reg would just be lost.
It's odd though, after a quick google it seems that normally happens when you've had to go through a few hoops to get the registration in the first place, eg imported a 1975 car in 1987, and had to fight to get a 1975 plate. Apparently this used to happen a lot, but no longer and definately not to a 53 plate car!

you can transfer a private/personal plate onto the car, but you cannot transfer the current plate onto a different car.
Not sure why they have done that though. They tend to do it when issuing age related plates to stop people making a quick buck by selling a pre '62 suffix plate with no date marker, although occasionally, they have been known to miss this finer detail out!

My guess is that this particular car was registered from new with a private plate. The first owner transferred it off when they sold the car, so it was given an age related plate (that just happens to be a 53 plate).
