Just a thought, but have you seen the car is it's "broken" state, as it might be okay and he is just trying to con you.

Quick update for anyone interested; I`ve agreed to pay the buyer £1300 so he can source his own engine and have it fitted in his own time. This way, there`s an end to the whole situation, I don`t need to bother with the trouble of having to source an engine, and risk him coming back again if said engine fails. I`ve no doubt the buyer was thrashing the tits off the car causing the engine to go, but there`s no way to prove this. I`m also confident that if we went to court, he would have a hard time in getting anything as it`s legally down to him to prove to the court that the fault was known by me before I sold it, and it was a manufacture fault and not wear and tear on a 120,000 mile engine. A At the end of the day, both parties are happy enough. I`ve lost a big chunk of money on this car, but worse things happen. I think i`ll stick to my older, simpler cars from the 60`s & 70`s in future! I never have any issues with these! Thanks for all the input guys. Ouch thats a big amount to have to swallow, at least its behind you now and you haven't got any negative publicity out of it. The same would probably have happened if you'de sold one of the sporting ford equivalents to the scooby when they were that age and it got ragged silly too. On the whole I think more expensive older vehicles now are bought by people who are more aware of their limitations and/ or willing to put them right when they go wrong. |

However, conditions of the refund are that I can get an independent inspection done prior to sending him the money. I`m pretty confident he`s genuine with regards to the engine going, although like I said before, am almost sure it was through it being abused. i`ll put this one down to experience! |

Nothing to worry about anymore. The normal cars I sell are sold to, generally, older people. They seem to know how to treat an older car more often, and buy them knowing that they are normally 40 odd years old, and quite like the idea of fiddling with them. |
