A superb original Ford Motorsport developed Escort RS1600i with complete history from new.
EQUIPMENT
Colour coded bumpers with front and rear overriders, laminated windscreen and all round safety glass, RS aerodynamic front and rear spoilers, RS1600i decals, Ford spot lamps, remote control door mirrors, RS 4 spoke leather trimmed steering wheel, rev counter, cassette holder, 2 speed plus intermittent wipers, tailgate wash wipe, Ford RS interior with sports reclining seats, head restraints, side window demisters, perforated headlining, coat hooks, vanity mirror on passenger sun visor, cigar lighter, rear ashtrays, front door stowage bins, 3-speed heater fan, coin box, trip recorder, tachometer, roof mounted digital clock. Factory options; Tinted glass, electric front windows, tilt/slide sunroof.
EXTERIOR
The exterior of this RS1600i is finished in rare Ford Strato Silver (code V6), a colour of which along with Graphite Grey fewest RS1600i’s were made, only 250 of each. The paintwork has a bright gleaming shine and smooth finish, complimented by the correct RS1600i decals on the bonnet, boot lid and sides. Slight paint indifference on the offside A-pillar and two light scratches on the front bumper do not detract from the overall aesthetic appeal of this fantastic example. The original rear spoiler is perfectly straight and free from common distortion issues, and all further exterior trim sections are in excellent order as are the glass, lights and badges, the glass having original number plate etching present on all but the opening rear quarters which have been fitted post sale. A fantastic example of the first front wheel drive Ford ever to wear the RS badge!
INTERIOR
The interior of this RS1600i is in fantastic order. Finished in Shark Grey Crushed Velour (trim code TC), the seats and bolsters have retained all structural integrity and the coverings have only the mildest age related wear. The matching door cards and perforated headlining are in pristine condition, although the passenger internal door pull has some mild sun discolouration. The deep grey carpets are protected by genuine Ford rubber over mats, but the drivers mat has been replaced with a new Ford item. Amazingly, just one tiny hairline crack is present on the dashboard and a small circular air freshener covers a tiny hole above the central air vents where an alarm sensor was fitted. All interior equipment is functional and the trim pieces intact, including the immaculate rear parcel shelf which has remained free from speakers cut outs. The original Ford push button radio cassette (model P21) completes this wonderfully original classic Ford interior.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Fitted with Fords 1600 Compound Value angle Hemispherical chamber (CVH) unit, producing 115 BHP when new, mated to the Bosch K Jetronic Fuel Injection System incorporating deceleration fuel shut off. The car accelerates smoothly to a maximum speed of 118mph and achieves 0-60 in 8.7 seconds with an addictive rasp from the standard size exhaust. The gear changes are light and exact, a pleasure to operate.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The beautiful original 15 X 6 inch RS seven spoke alloy wheels are largely free from curbing damage and only the closest inspection will reveal minor areas where the finish has become thin. The wheels are shod with matching quality Toyo Proxes 195/50/R15 tyres all round, with excellent tread remaining and the spare wheel still wear the original factory Dunlop SP Super Sport D4. Diagonally split hydraulic circuits with tandem master cylinder, vacuum servo assistance and 9.4” ventilated discs up front bring the car to straight and steady halt.
HISTORY FILE
An immaculately presented and complete history file hosts an eye-watering amount of Ford Main Dealer receipts and invoices, and the original service book holds no less than 24 Ford main dealer stamps! This truly incredible example was registered new by Ford Main Agent Perrys of North Finchley, London on 1 August 1983 to first owner Mr J L Barber of Hertfordshire. The original purchase invoice illustrates an original purchase price of £7,538 which includes an extra charge of £120 for a full Ziebart rust protection application. The sheer level of history retained with this car portrays without doubt the fastidious and enthusiastic ownership this car has enjoyed, with the previous keeper taking ownership in July 2004. A complete collection of point of sale literature is neatly displayed in the file and includes an original sales brochure, service book, operating guides, supplements, radio guide and even a workshop manual! Further accompaniments to the colossal history folder include many previous MOT’s helping to verify the low 94,908 miles covered, other maintenance documents and RS Owners Club membership information.
A remarkably well preserved and original example of a rare car with an absolute must see history file, one for the true enthusiast.
MOT January 2015, HPI Clear, Approved Used Car Certificate.
