Hi All, You may remember sometime ago I posted about borrowing my mates BMW E30 325i Sport and wondering if it'd replace my trusty Mk2 Golf. Well, the answer in the end was 'no'. As an everyday practical car the Mk2 is better, fair enough, that's a keeper... but I still want the BMW. Now I have a new predicament - should I sell my Mk1 instead and get the Beemer, stick with what I've got now and let the E30 pass me by... or try and keep all of them, not ideal in terms of space and funds really as I'm getting married this year too...? How do people manage their space, time and money to keep more than a couple of cars? Are you permanently skint and never get on top of all the little jobs on every car? I have a single garage which would house any of the cars and a large driveway that'll fit two cars easy, three at a squeeze but we do also have my fiancee's Lupo... and no, that can't be replaced with an old banger! ;D Will I be kicking myself in years to come if I miss out on the BMW which is in very nice original condition and goes really well? Will I get bored of it soon... probably not...? On the other hand, would I actually want to kill myself (probably) if I let my Mk1 go on the basis that it's the rarest of the rare (in Golf terms) - a 1975 'swallowtail' with 35,000 genuine miles! Should I cancel the wedding and divert all funds into cars... and obviously be single and possibly dead once my fiancee finds out...? Any thoughts? Here's some pics...? BMW... 2.5L creamy goodness... Mk1... 1.5L twin 40's noisy autobox kick-down-ness... What to do? Cheers Stu

don't sell the mk1 you'll regret it! It looks really sweet I think you should wait untill you can do it with out selling anything or giving up on marriage.

Should I cancel the wedding and divert all funds into cars... and obviously be single and possibly dead once my fiancee finds out...? thats what I did! lol, ... well something close to that... I wish I could give you more than a tenner for the car ramps to solve your problem (which by the way will hopefully be this Friday, but I'll call anyway), but read on ...... also, yes, I am permanently skint, and even more since I got the hunter too. In the 5 weeks I have had it, it has already cost me about £300 in various parts which I have replaced in the vain hope of making the bloody thing go, but its still persisting with temperamental fits of engine suffocation. If it had a neck I would have snapped it by now..... and please do not sell the mk1. the mk1 wins hands down on the bemmer any time. I admit, I am not much of a BMW fan though... but you seriously CANNOT get rid of the golf for a black bemmer. The bemmer's entire charisma is half the size of one of the golf's balls.

Keep the Golf and get a BMW when you can. The Golf it hot Don't even come close to the BMW! Although, I'd probably just buy the BMW anyway Got my 35 in the garage at my house, the Mini 1000 on the drive and the Jetta out the front. You could probably put 4-5 cars on the drive, but our nextdoor neibour needs access to his gate The Hornet and Bantam are in a lockup near by. Although, I may be selling the Hornet and Bantam soon

The beemer sucks weenee. It was that shape that gave beemers the bad name they have today.

I like the Beemer.
Hard choice though.
Recently, as in the last few weeks, I've had the same challenge, but in my case practicality won through...

I have a single garage which would house any of the cars and a large driveway that'll fit two cars easy, three at a squeeze but we do also have my fiancee's Lupo... and no, that can't be replaced with an old banger! ;D This is all very familiar! getting a car for the GF was a bad idea, she doesnt drive yet so its another project in waiting, in my only local working space, its not taxed MOT'd and doesnt start so I work on the road at home! DOH I have a temporary solution for two at the moment but this needs to change and two elswhere, running an average of 1.5 of them a year, not ideal, specially when I ride a bike to work 70% of the year. so I ask myself the same question. I know that i'll need something for my video projects, so I should get a practical car soon too! If I were you and you have the cash to hand I'd A. Buy that 325 and see how you get on, one will be pushed to the back of your mind or not used. me i'd shift the Mk2, or, sensile approach B. Sell the Golf, and buy a nice 318is like Pogs.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

The correct answer is all of them.
I need all of the cars too, it's just one of those sad things.

Some excellent replies! Glad to see I'm not the only one in this predicament - so many cars, so little time, money and space...! Rainking has the right idea, but even the Lupo is a nice model (1.4 16v sport) plus I don't like the idea of my fiancee using any of 'my' cars for work everyday... Any more thoughts? Would I be insane to consider parting with the '75 Golf?

E30 is a hack car - (waits for the pog abuse) but niche models like da pog are ok

Buy the 325i Sport! The values are going to absolutely rocket soon, get one now! Your mk1 is cool, but y'know...

What E30?
If there is a choice, it's between the daily driver MkII and the E30...and you've already decided on that. On the other hand if someone were to offer 'proper' money for the Swallowtail then you could get the Bee-Em as a pure fun car and stick some dosh in the bank!
I'm not sure that everyone on here realises just how special a Swallowtail is...it's not just a MKI!

I'm not sure that everyone on here realises just how special a Swallowtail is...it's not just a MKI! Oh, yes - it's no ordinary Mk1, that's for sure - and according to a few people I've spoken to from the Mk1 owners club there may well be under ten left on UK roads, this being the second or third oldest RHD anyone seems to know of at the moment! I've no doubt that to the right person the swallowtail is worth more than most E30's bar an M3 to be honest but the 325i Sport is in good nick and a lovely car to drive, a change from Golf's hence my dilema. As for my Mk2, that's going nowhere - it's taken me too long (and too much money) to get it how I want it and it's the ideal quick reliable daily driver for me Edit: and yes - they all seem to behave themselves as soon as you start thinking of selling just to make things that bit harder to decide on!
