Hi guys a friend of mine has got a 205 gti that has now got an mi16 engine in it. Once he got it back the gearbox let go and a guy has recommended putting a 205 diesel gearbox in because its stronger. The gearbox is in but he says that he's struggling to connect it up and that he needs a certain h pattern gear selector? Does this seem right to you because its been going on for over a year now. Can anyone point me in the right direction for the required parts because he just wants to use and enjoy the car! Thanks in advance.

I'm not a 205 expert but don't go fitting a diesel box to a Mi16 if he intends to "use and enjoy the car", the diesel box has a tall final drive, where as the the Mi16 box has a short final drive.
The diesel box wont be any stronger, they both use BE boxes.

I've been told the gearbox that's fitted requires the gear selector that has reverse to the right and back. Any idea where I could obtain this part? Thanks again for the feedback!

it doesn't matter if one was a BE1 or a BE3 box, they can be swapped about easily.
As Dave said, you really don't want a diesel box, physically they are the same, as in they are no stronger, later casings will be stiffer to cope with the diesel torque, given its torque that kills gearboxes not power, the ratios will be particularly wrong.
What you need is a 1.6 gti or an MI16 or xsara vts box, 1.9 boxes are a little long for a 16v motor.

Me and my mate both built Mi16's back around 2001. He put a dizzler box in and I used the 1.6 box that was already in my 205. His was better on the motorway, but mine was like a scolded cat on the Gower back roads. As Welshpug says, the shorter ratio boxes are what you really want to bring out the best in an Mi16 conversion.
