right. i'm currently doing some work on my 309, valve stem seals, and i've taken the head off too as it's never had a gasket, so nows as good as time as any. and while i have the manifolds off, well in the politest way of saying. the inlet just looks a bit curse word. so how can i polish it? it is cast ally, so quite rough. do i use a wire wheel in a drill at slow speeds? or one of them metal polishing wheel thingys? or am i missing something totally?

Blood, sweat and tears.
It wants a real good clean, then decide if you want it smooth finish. If you want to go smooth and mirror polished then you will want lots of sanding to make it smooth then polish it back with various grades until its at the finish you want.
Personally I'd just clean it up with aluminium cleaner and make it look as new.

Some days you just need to take a grinder to an inanimate object, just to make your day a tiny bit better!!

There's no grain like wood, so it doesn't matter which way you sand. As you work through finer grades the marks will get smaller and smaller anyway, until you're ready to move to polishing compounds. It will be a hell of a lot of work, but thankfully it doesn't look like an overcomplicated shape.

If you want it polished and shiny do Not use a wire wheel , it will mark it . Polishing is all about working in stages . You start off with a course abrasive and work down to a finer grade - only when absolutelt all of it is at the same atge other wise youe have to go back . To get it mirror like you need to use something like a right angle die grinder ges-amg-ecx.imaazon.com/images/G/01/th/aplus/ingersollrand/B000VYZ1HW-bottom.jpg , With scotchbrite pads image.customclassictrucks.com/f/techarticles/1112cct_1970_chevrolet_c10_metal_shaving/35517175/1112cct-19-o-%2B1970-chevrolet-c10-metal-shaving%2Bscotch-pad.jpgYou can get these in different colours denoting differnt grits [ corseness ] I would get brown to start then red and finally blue . Then it needs a lot of autosol and elbow grease or going on a cotton polishing wheel on a bench grinder . That may be a bit costly buying the kit but you will find the grinder really usefull for loads of other stuff .
