They are timed using a light beam at the start and finish ( clock starts when they break the light beam at the start, clock stops when they break the beam at the finsh)
the pice of metal is called a timing strut and ensures that all cars have a clean and equal light beam breaker.

As miked says, it's a beam breaker for the timing system.. It's meant to be the front-most point of the car, so everyone's equal And yea, the scenery is pretty nice around Bouley.. Most of the north coast of Jersey is much the same really, it's just the rest of the island they're trying to turn into 'luxury apartments' that noone needs or can afford! //Edit to include Some more slideways pics: Was using a tripod on the day, don't think I'll bother next time though as it's hard to pan the camera round as cars go past - end up with crystal scenery & blurred cars  :?

Great photos Jerseysi and I really liked the one of my Ferrari - you don't have a chance to get pics when you're driving! I have all my own wheels on as well - a stray exhaust clamp punctured my n/s front in second practice and I then ran on borrowed 20 year old tyres (no grip). The Ferraris in this series have to run in original 'leave the Factory' spec (including road tyres) except for safety gear and so can never hope to compete with the times of the modified cars. When you take this into account 50s up this hill is not bad. My favourites - the modified Escorts, fantastic to see these classics thrown about. Shame about the 'E' Type though.
