I'm I looking to get a small economical diesel and just wondered what people recommend. Must be cheap to buy and maintain with mpg over 50 I'd quite like it to be in the cheAper tax band I.e. Undergoing 1.5
The only one I can think of is a pug 106, any other ideas. I know more modern cars will be more economical like the dci clios but I don't want the hassle of all the sophisticated electrics going wrong!

That 106 will pobably be your best bet . Simple tough and reliable , usually quite well looked after . Exccellent mpg . Cheap parts .

Why not get a sub 1500cc petrol, you'll still get 40-45mpg (@ 8p less a litre its marginal) and you won't have something that sounds like someone's bashing you in the head with a brick...

I'm driving a 106 diesel at the minute. They are amazingly slow but the handling isn't bad so you just never touch the brakes and maintain momentum. Doing about 55mpg and I thrash it everywhere.

That 106 will pobably be your best bet . Simple tough and reliable , usually quite well looked after . Exccellent mpg . Cheap parts . I've owned two of them. Nothing but trouble. My s1 wasn't quite so bad besides a leaky sunroof, but the s2 went constantly wrong. Plus, I got equally as good mpg out of my mk3 1.9d l Golf and my old Pug 306 TD. I'd advise against the 106 at all costs. I'd recommend the latter two over the 106. But preferably the Golf. Obviously the tax will be higher, but it will be worth it. Just as well as they never worked well anyway.

Lupo SDI would be my choice, but with it being a 1.7 kind of rules it out. TDI is under 1.5 but has the electronics you don't want. Don't forget Arosa is basically same.

How about a Metro Diesel or not diesel, but a Toyota Yaris? Rover 115 Diesel was another I was going to suggest If you're looking at a Metro or 115, you might as well go for a 106. Same engine and box as in the Metro, but not a Metro.

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

Just as well as they never worked well anyway. I've had half a dozen of them and every one of them brilliant. Got 73mpg out of one of them, and they aren't that slow. If not a 106, a 206 1.4 hdi gets into the £30 bracket and will do north of 65mpg. reliable enough that the electrics aren't a big issue in the earlier ones. heaters go funny though.
