how do I..........borrow a mates car legally ?
My mate needs to borrow his mates 540 touring BMW from tomorrow untill next Tuesday.
But he doesnt have his own insurance policy (company car). The owner is a motortrader, so he's insured not the cars he owns.
how can he drive the car legally ?

another one for the pot here if noone minds...
Is it poss for two people to have their own independent insurance on the same car? so like if one person has a crash it does not affect the other?

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

If he was on trade business (ie picking some parts up for the garage) then as long as theres a verbal contract between the trader and any tom dick or harry with a licence ("go and pick some parts up in that 540") then on a lot of trade policies thats fine, but check this particular one. Might be a bit tricky at night. Maybe he could be test driving it? Again, bit tricky at night but ok for the Sunday.

Is it poss for two people to have their own independent insurance on the same car? so like if one person has a crash it does not affect the other? No. Its actually illegal and considered fraud. Goes back to maritime days when half a dozen people would insure the same ship, sail it out to the cornish coast and drive it onto the rocks. If there is more than one insurance policy on the same vehicle they are BOTH VOID. Read the small print, its in there...

You could always use the old 14 Day Cooling Off Period Trick ;D Does that apply to insurance? I know in theory it covers 'distance selling', so any goods or service you've bought unseen you can return within 14 days. HOWEVER I feel they'll argue that you've 'used' the service and hence have benefited for the 14 days, and they can charge you for the 14 days of service used. Note also most insurers don't use a linear scale of payments, 14 days insurance is not charged at 14/356ths of the total year policy price, it could be up to 30% of the total. I once cancelled insurance with Elephant after 6 months and got diddly squat back. As another example, if you buy a mobile phone from a telesales or online retailer, depending on network they won't accept it back under the distance selling regulations unless you prove it's either faulty, not fit for purpose or was wrongly sold to you. It's for the same reasons, you've had 14 days use of the service whether you chose to use it or not.
