whilst at work today i notice in the garden next door was a ford capri laser looking very unloved and looked like it hadnt moved for a long time (had stuff growing on it!) i was tempted to knock on the door to see if they wanted to sell but felt uncomfortable knocking on the door ![O_o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/browraise.png)

not if you are polite about it no, give a knock, say something like "hey, i am sorry to bother you, but i was just wondering if you would be willing to part with the Capri?"
all they can do is say no if its not for sale

Does it look like you might get shot/ torn apart by dogs when asking? If not try then not to look like a traveller as they've probably been asked about a 1000 times a week for it as scrap if it is visible in any way from the road....And ask are you interested in selling implying your prepared to part with £££'s for it rather than wanting it for nothing.

if you don't want to come across as rude how about a nice hand written note popped through the door saying you are an enthusiast who wants to purchase the car if its for sale and want to bring the vehicle to its former glory etc with your contact details that would be the best way to go about it, i would respect that and keep the note and give them a shout if i heard of similar for sale or decided to sell because personally i get peed off with people knocking on my house asking if they can buy my cars (even the ones that are used)I'm polite to them but i just feel like telling them to pee off, saying that most people do find an excuse to make a sharp exit when they see my poochies.

I popped a hand written note through a door last year gave an explanation of why I wanted it (to restore) and asked permission to view it with regards to buying it,i left my full name and two contact numbers.after a week or two I had a call inviting me to view it and hopefully I will be buying it in the next few weeks.all you can do is be polite and show respect and hopefully you can rescue the car, good luck!(I asked the same question on here not that long ago and got positive advice that worked for me.)

Someone put a note through my letter box about 6 months ago asking if I wanted to sell the Ford Maverick parked on my front. I still have that note and will be calling him when I am ready to sell in the spring!

I did this a few years back. Rolled up in my beetle and asked if the knackered 76 VW camper was for sale to be told that it was mine as long as I could cart it away! Never did anything with it and then someone did the same to me, result...for someone...eventually.

It's not rude to ask as long as you're polite.
I often drive past a house in the country with a Capri Laser parked on the drive. It's been stood there for about 6 years or so now not moved. It was in nice condition when it was parked there, however the owner had some mechanical issues with it and it hasn't moved since and is now covered in green.
About three years ago I deceided to call in and enquire. The door was answered by the owner's wife and she said if she had her way I could have it, but her husband wouldn't sell. It still hasn't moved since and has gone from being in great condition to looking very sad.

Always knock, nearly all my cars come from door knocking! Be polite but enthusiastic, don't turn up looking like a traveller, the worse they can do is say no!
I even bought a car out of Waitrose carpark once, it really doesn't hurt to stop and ask!

I'm not the most forward person, so it's no something I'm that comfortable doing. But I did knock a door a few months ago when I spotted a Scimitar. A nice old boy answered the door. The car wasn't his, he'd be glad to see it gone. He let me have a good poke around it. I left a note with contact details for the owner, and drove off giving the old boy a big wave. It's still there, so something might come of it yet.
If it looks safe to do so, go for it. As above, polite and enthusiatic is the key. Even if it's not for sale, folks will be happy enough the car is of interest.

You have had all the good advice.
Good manners, enthusiasm and also refering to what you have at home should count in your favour.
I have given stuff away for free just because people were enthusiastic or I knew they would use it.
Then post pics when you have it.

Always worth a knock! Massive +1 on turning up in something retro or interesting if at all possible, but just be polite, courteous, let 'em know who you are and what you're about and it'll be fine. They'd probably appreciate a chat about it even if it's not for sale!
I've got a few numbers from people who want my Capri - it's not going anywhere any time soon but i've chatted with them and will keep hold of their numbers just in case. One's even offered to come and help me work on it which is pretty cool.

i do this sort of thing a lot, be thoroughly nice and enthusiastic, don't at any point put down what they have and start telling them it needs this that and the other and will cost this much - like youre doing them a favour and they're causing you problems by taking it - thats not negotiation, its just being a c**t.
give them a polite offer with clear intentions and if they say no still be real nice and a good sport about it - they may change their mind in the future or remember you for something else.
be the nicest bloke ever and it will see you well in these situations.
i have found you need to be super nice to people you approach to buy from and hardball the hell out of people that try to sell to you.

Always worth a try! I used to feel the same and found an uno turbo years ago but never had the bottle to knock, a week later the car was being viciously hiab'd onto a scrap lorry and I proper kicked myself ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) from that day on I learned my lesson and now knock whenever I see something, as said be polite worst they can say is no ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Well thanks to this thread, I always drove past a alley that has a MK1 escort 1300e, today I thought I drive down and have a look. Lucky for me a old bloke was working on his car and knew the owner. After a long chat I wrote a note and the friend of the owner said he will have a word too. The owner has had the car over 35 years and won't let it go, I don't know what will come of it but at least I made a start to the process. By the way I was shocked that the car had a MOT and was taxed.
