2.8 & 2.9 have the same 93 bore but not much else unfortunately! different cam phasing, cam drive & cover, stroke (68.5 vs 72mm) & piston compression height. Looking at +40 Bronco/Ranger 2.9 pistons as they seem good value from the US. I hadn't planned on doing yet another another engine rebuild... but finding strong running motors that can be tested in a car is a rare thing nowadays patching a rusty hole discovered under copious filler on rear 3/4 but daylight stopped play Still looking out for a cross-referenced piston for the M60 V8 if anyone out there has an encyclopedic knowledge of pistons?? standard M60B40 specs are - Flat top Bore 89mmpiston height (gudgeon centre to top) 32.95mm gudgeon pin 22mm Something to drop the CR down to 8-8.5 would be handy ! Nissan KA24E Sohc is as close as i can get, has a nice dish & good height but 21mm pin

Could you not just get the rods bushed on the little end from 22 down to 21mm? It's something I would consider after the faff with my cologne engine rebuild

bushing the small ends on the M60 is definitely a possibility, i need to speak to a few local engineers I'm at a crossroads with these engines, i love this car to bits, but it's also been a learning curve & a pain in the ****! It's either throw x amount of money at the 2.9i for a rebore & pistons & sundries Or throw about 1/2 as much again at the BMW V8 for pistons, modifying pistons to fit, gaskets, head bolts, etc votes on the poll & comments much appreciated!

Just read through this for the first time, awesome build, massive shame about the M60. If its feasible i'd say rebuild with whatever pistons work. You've gone through so much to get it to this stage already.

Cheap and dirty rebuild on the cologne to get the car running and useable again, and rebuild the bimmer v8 over a longer period to get it right good thinking batman. I get confused when i strip motors down & feel compelled to buy them lots of new parts

Temporary V6 - ok i'm just chucking this in to get the car useable again! Heads refitted, C3 autobox & torque converter bolted on (mainly because this was quicker than building the MT75 V6 hybrid) 2.8 carb manifold (again to get it up and running quick) mounting hles needed redrilling to bodge it onto the 2.9 some of the original gearbox mounting bolts had snapped off many moons ago (the transit box was on new mountings further back) so now was the time to drill them out & re-tap in she goes would look good with the blower on there... but that would be getting distracted from the main goal... which is just being able to drive it again!

Previously i'd started modding the 2.8 carb dizzy to run the 2.9 with a few bodges, but that wasn't so simple as the cam runs the opposite direction in the 2.8 so the skew gear is different, & i chipped the b*--* trying to swop it over from one to the other! So i went back to look at how quickly i could re-engineer my homemade microsquirt EFi loom that i had on the BMW V8, and set about modifying it for the 2.9i. Being 3rd time around on an MS setup, it didn't take too long to get all the inputs sorted. Got the tach signal from the dizzy, calibrated the ford TPS, using the same GM 2.5 bar map sensor i had on the previous setup. [- that's not to say that MS is perfect. E.g. microsquirt and megasquirt MS2 are essentially similar but have a different main pinout connector. Unfortunately many of the diagrams on the microsquirt site for ignition connections (& other inputs/inputs) are just MS2 ones. So it leaves you in the dark sometimes!] then updated my firmware to 3.3.3 so i could use a .msq map i found from an early- 90s mustang 5.0. This just made it a bit quicker as it uses the same TFI ignition system and so the ignition input/output settings are already done. Then changed the cylinder/injector cc settings to suit the V6. Also the VE and ignition maps for the 302 v8 will be a good starting point as it's a similar 2-valve iron lump. Will this be quicker than bodging on a carb & dizzy? We shall see...

A really informative read, keep up the hard work and I'm sure you will have the 2.9 up and running in no time

Might work out quicker than a carb & dizzy, but i find its easier to setup and you can put launch control on the megasquirt

Too many projects, not enough time.

Current likely low-CR piston for the BMW V8 is Nissan Z24 cheapo Nippon jobs from the US (they're so cheap it's a wonder they're made of aluminium...) With a small amount of machining at the squish perimeter, they should give a CR around 8.5:1

Back on the 2.9i - i got a bit carried away with trying to fit the M112 blower with a 'keep it strong & simple' approach... set about building a simple new box plenum from 8mm alloy plate that will mount the blower on top and house a small water-air exchanger matrix jigged-up ready for TIG This goes on a new lower plate mounted direct on the lower half of the existing intake manifold Still lots to do.... (& why do i get sidetracked into trying to supercharge?! )

It happens. I've been peering at Audi v6 superchargers of late, to go on my 24v. Really should just get the car back on the road, but...

front suspension was looking a bit neglected so it was time for a bit of bare-metalling & repainting & whist i was at it 24mm ARB & new shock inserts went in current swirl pot & pump setup needs some rubberised mounts to cut down the pump noise so that's on the job list propshaft centre-bearing rubber bush was a bit knackered (i think from the transit-box running the prop at a funny angle) so that got replaced Late fiesta brake servo modified to fit (the original one mysteriously disappeared when moving workshops). Also new spherical top-mounts to adjust-out the camber change with lowered springs (although adjustable TCAs would have probably been easier as the rally top mounts are designed with 2 1/4" ID springs in mind) and some cheeky rot was hiding inside the light cavity on both front wings, considered changing the wings but the rest is all good so it got patched So many small things... But won't be long now (better-not be anyway as the MOT is only 3 weeks away - that's my motivational deadline!) Thanks for looking & happy motoring

Hi folks, July update - we're MOT'd & back on the road with the 2.9! M60 V8 rebuild is in hibernation due to cost of decent pistons, i could try cheapo nissan-nippon cast jobs but want to add boost so really need a decent forged piston, but at around £1100 a set for JE or Carillo i've got some serious saving-up to do The C3 autobox i'd put on the 2.9 was leaking badly out of the T/C at higher revs so i swopped that last weekend for an old type-9 5spd kindly donated by a mate (he needs it back though) so still looking for a 2wd mt75 i can cannibalise for the tail section to make a hybrid v6 mt75 box - anyone got an old broken one lying around? please PM me other than that it's driving well, still working on the fuel map in tunerstudio & logworks to get the AFR optimised, but it goes a lot better than i expected

still lots of paintwork to tidy up fited new single-leaf 2.8i rear springs which has improved the stance a bit engine bay looking a tidier now, the big BMW 540i radiator had the pipes on opposite sides to the V6 so crossover pipes were needed (& still need some kind of air filter...) thanks for looking & happy motoring

It's been a while!
Got the Eaton M112 up and running today, still a lot of things to iron out, but she runs!
belt tensioner setup is very temporary, i was mucking around with different idler pulley and tensioner pulley setups before i get something more solid welded up from 8mm ally plate
air filters want to go where the interior fan intake mound is, so the filters are temporary too (but didn't wanna run it without em)
Peace to y'all!
