I'm planning a 2-3 day break to the isle of man for me and the missus on the may bank holiday weekend (just before the place goes mad with TT fever!).
I'm selling my mk2 golf driver to scratch the itch and get a 16v, I also think one of those would be a lot more suitable for the island hooning I plan to do! Just wondering what your experiences of the island have been (not too interested in the bike side of things, if I was I'd be going a week or 2 later), and any places of interest I should visit?

We love it, been on the bike loads of times and raced a few cars in the Manx Classic hillclimb and sprint event.
Recommend going to 'The Sound', a nice cafe over looking the calf of man, great for seal watching etc.
Get the tram up Snaefell on a clear day Steam train down to Castletown and walk along the beach at Port Erin.
Thrap over the unlimited mountain road, stopping at the Creg Na Baa pub with your brakes on fire (well, that's what we did in my old K Series powered Skoda Rapid).
The wild life park is good at Quarry Bends.
Peel transport museum is tiny but houses a P50!
Don't forget to say Hi to the fairies at Fairy Bridge!
Loads to do!

Been a couple of times on the bike but not for the TT. Lovely island and I plan to take my 5 over there this year. Only downside is the robbing bastards that are the isle of man steam packet company. But as above loads to see and do.

Stayed In Douglas which is a cracking place, Creg Na Baa as said above is great for food, also Casltetown is worth a visit, but a must visit is Jurby Junk in Jurby which on an old airfield and sells tennis rackets with holes in, broken records, cups with handle missing and other such tat, also had Mike Baldwin (from Corrie) Jag parked outside with four flat tyres. Great place to visit!

Couldn't recommend it enough. Just drive, stop, take in what you want, make a long weekend of it Lovely place and friendly people, only beef is the steam packet seem to hold the monopoly for getting a car there. It's not cheap, but worth it. And yea, the roads are fun too.

The only downside I'm finding so far is actually getting there and back with the car, cheapest quote I have is £200! Then theres getting to heysham from Lincoln and back, plus fuel for general hooning around the circuit! I gather the murray's museum isnt open until the 10th may? I've heard a few people say they've overtaken coppers doing 3 figures before in retro cars and been given a wave or an appreciative smile!

IOM is a gorgeous place, with excellent 'unrestricted' roads (no speed limits!).
I go every year for the TT races on my bike, although have been other times too, be sure to check roadworks before you go (I didn't and the mountain road was closed for resurfacing during my stay...)
Remember, respect the speed limits because the Police will go hard on speeders in 30 limits (damn right when there are 160+mph roads available).
Best chippy on the Island is Ramsey Trawler just off Parliament square.
Have fun, and take loads of pics!

To be fair, 30mph limits are well justified in built up areas, but the unlimited roads are a rare opportunity not to be missed. Its no wonder top gear do so much filming there

I`ve got family in Laxey. Great place, and well worth a visit to the Laxey wheel.
Apart from that, as everyone has said above....enjoy.
One other oddity; only reverse into parking spaces at a right angle to main roads. If you`re caught reversing out of these spaces onto a main road, it`s a hefty fine. (this probably doesn`t make sense, but it`s a Friday night and I`m half asleep and I know what I mean!)

Yes the Steampacket are robbing bastards and there's also a new chippy in Ramsey now which is better than the Trawlerman! The only bad roadworks going on over here at the moment is Peel Road and Douglas Promenade, both in 30mph zones so shouldn't interfere with driving around the Island too much.
£200 is quite cheap to get over here, I had to buy a one way ticket back on the Island once when I brought a Mk1 Escort over, cost me over £300 with it being such late notice!

I was also looking at camping rather than BnBs as most seem a bit expensive. Will it be warm enough at the beginning of may to camp? Also how much am I looking at? I heard theres a good site at glenlough union mills?

You can get some deals on hotels if you check late rooms etc, Glen Lough isn't bad, just a fairly basic campsite.
Just before Glen Lough there is Saba Glen which do glamping in Eco yurts!
The weather is always a gamble though!
Don't over look Homestay though, lots of residents rent out their second homes cheaply.

Go twice a year, have done every year for last 8 or so years, obviously for TT & Manx GP, but as already been said, loads to do. The 'Electric Railway' up to the top of Snaefell is worth a go & the steam train from Douglas to Port Erin. An absolute, not to be missed drive, which when you're there, you really really must do, is, following the TT course, down the fastest section, known as Sulby Straight but then, turn right at Sulby Glen Hotel & follow the winding road up to the 'Bungalow' at the top of the mountain. It is absolutely sensational, the scenery is truly breathtaking ( watch out for the sheep though) Also go the the Marine pub on the seafront in Peel, the BEST meal on the island & huge portions You'll love the place

Cheers for the info guys, I absolutely CANNOT wait to get over there. Just hope petrol isn't too expensive as I can see me using a lot of it on such a small island!

Yep, weather is always hit ans miss over here! There's also Glen Wyllin campsite in Kirk Michael and the Claddaghs in Sulby. If it were my choice I'd opt for Glen Wyllin as it's got quite a nice beach right next to it too, I *think* they may also have onsite cabins or something, vaguely remember driving past something like that last time I was down there.
We've done homestay for the past few years but with a little one arriving in April we're having to give it a miss this year. It's not quite renting out your second homes, it's renting out your spare bedrooms!
Fuel's something like £1.36/ltr for poverty, £1.40 for Super and £1.46 for Diesel at the moment.

My Cousin is an A&E Doctor there (he does get busy stitching bikers back together unfortunately!) but the sights and smells really are fantastic. Its a Gem so close to our front doors.
