Yeah I wonder if we will get refunded for every day or will it be full months only? Just think how much that will make for the government if it's only full months.

Monthly as the new taxing system is going to support monthly taxation as well as annually.
Of course the cost to tax monthly will be higher though.

Thanks for the heads-up, I knew the physical tax disk was stopping, didn't know it would be impossible to buy or sell "taxed & tested" cars privately after the change When I buy cars, it's either local moderns or interesting Retros. It will be a REAL pain if I need to make a 500 mile round trip (as often happens) to view a new "taxed & tested - drive away" retro, but not be able to drive it home before I wait a few days to get an insurance certificate posted out - then make *another* 500 mile trip - stopping at a post office on the way so I can tax the now untaxed motor - before I can drive the new beastie home . It's not long ago that the Police aggressively stopped me on a busy motorway and threatened to impound my car as the DVLA ANPR computer had flagged it as having no tax - even tho' the tax disk was in the window. I wonder if DVLA systems will be fixed and working 100% before the tax disks are phased out later this year Revenue? So if I buy a "T&T" car on the 10th of the month, seller has to send the tax disk back (but can only claim a refund for "full months" and loses what he's paid for this month. I then need to tax it myself, backdated to 1st of this month. End result - UK Gov gets paid this months tax twice In true RR "every cloud has a silver lining" positive thinking mode ... [insert positive thought here - when I can think of one]

Is there any solid proof this is going to happen? Unless you pay DD, who is going to know who payed for the tax on said vehicle when its sold? Are they really going to cross reference log book changes against tax renewal?
Also has a quick google and I cant find any other websites mentioning this. Nothing on the DVLA or gov.uk websites.

Isn't this just going to force a lot of people to just pay their tax monthly by DD? Which will probably be more expensive?
Anyway, if you buy a car from a private seller, surely you could agree that they cancel their DD/claim their tax back AFTER you've got the car home?
I'm assuming it will be all web based anyway so you can just set up the DD or pay six/twelve months on your phone. In theory, it should show up on the system immediately?

I bet you'll still be able to "drive away", seller will have to send off the old fashioned refund form to update the modern system. Can't be quicker than you getting home!

I think they've come up with what they see as the simplest solution to the twin problems of the seller telling you it's taxed when it isn't, and the seller telling you it's taxed and then chopping it in when you start your 200 mile journey home. The reasoning in the draft law is concern that it would otherwise give you a get out of jail free card by pleading ignorance and saying you thought it was taxed. Link to the consultation document and draft legislation is here: www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/264624/3._Vehicle_excise_duty_-_administrative_changes.pdfEdit: there's a contact at the end of that document if you have any questions.

I think they've come up with what they see as the fastest way to screw you for more money to alleviate some of incredible debt this inept and useless govt have procured for us by mismanagement and deception and various other means. FTFY

Baffling. So I have a car for sale, chap comes and views it and says he wants it, arrange a day for him to collect it, I cancel the tax on the day loosing and tax I have paid into the current month and what if buyer now calls and says he changed his mind and doesn't want it. I have a now untaxed car on a public road, assume you have to tax it online again paying twice for the days in the month that have already passed ?
Crazy system. I agree with going paperless where possible but surely there is a better thought through system than this.

Crazy system indeed, why don't they just scrap the tax on cars and just keep it on fuel then everyone pays. This system also encourages people not to register cars in their name specially if you live in the sticks, also means you could park a untaxed car in your back street and the neighbors not complaining as they know no different. I think you need something in the screen to say the car is legally on the road

so if any of us was to buy a car at long distance we would either have to insure and tax said car going by the sellers description then travel 2/300 miles in hope that it was what they say it is to be able to drive it back, or would have to make 2 trips. And if your the seller then you would have to figure when is best to try to sell the car so you don't end up being out of pocket if the buyer is no show. Also buying or selling a car with various amounts of tax at the moment does tend to contribute to the value of the car and the chances of it being sold. when the new system is brought in it could make it more difficult to sell the car and at a much lower price...

Then what happens with the ones who decide to sell & immediately cash in the tax. It takes a while to sell so should be sorn'd. You buy & get a pull ? it's as well thought out as most laws are.

Perhaps they are trying the Spanish system where 2 trips would be like winning the lottery.lol More like 3-4.They 'll end up with a stagnant market like it is here.

Your all actually think that this government gives a flying shat about us 2nd hand car buyers and private sellers. They don't care one little bit. They hate the idea of loosing out on tax and vat ect they would of got if you`d bought a new car. Id be surprised if there were even many mp`s who have bought a 2nd hand car in their lives. Never mind understand the whole buying and selling process or what its like buying a car that's miles away. Remember these clowns don't live in our world. They wont do anything unless its earning them money and screwing people over.

I'm going to email tonight to ask how it will work in the real world in the ebay/long distance scenario, I'll throw the stealth tax angle in too.

Baffling ... Crazy system. I agree with going paperless where possible but surely there is a better thought through system than this. You're thinking we should do it the way we did introduced the "paperless driving license" right?* (ie. a nice, neat, plastic license which you can carry in your wallet - same as the rest of Europe - then add the special British twist by making it void unless you also carry a paper license with it)
*Apologies to non-UK readers. This post probably makes no sense to you - we have to live with the system and it makes no sense to us either!
