Does anyone know if an automatic gearbox from a 1000cc mini is the same as the box on a 1275? or will fit straight onto it?... Clutch bands on mine are buggered for 4th/reverse, and I can't for love or money find a 1275 auto box which considering the amount that get converted to manual surprises the hell out of me... I can't just convert it to a manual box as its the wife's car and she only has a license to drive auto's... ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png)

They're not the same boxes even though they do fit but they're totally different. In the cabin, I think the 998 auto box doesn't have a Park position, for example, and has a funny selector and I remember some bonkers chat about the 998 auto box needing an oil change every three thousand miles because it was very fragile.
Maybe the the reason you can't find a 1275 auto box is because they're a common upgrade to 998s because they're much better than the rubbish 'box that the 998s come with?

it only likes mineral oil as well, put semi-synth into it and it'll soon tell you its not at all happy...

I didnĀ“t even know there has been an automatic mini?! Must be pretty rare? When I first passed my test and wanted a Mini in 1996 they were everywhere, and they were unloved and cheap but a bit rubbish. As above, I think that's what led to them getting converted to manuals. I had Minis during the years upto and after the BMW Mini launch and couldn't believe my luck with the way prices went so I guess as the value went up, lots were converted to manual and reinvented as "GENUINE REAL MINI COOPER" complete with squint bonnet stripes and rotten door hinges.

If you haven't already, you could try MiniTechnique in Pilling for a 1275 auto box. Last time I spoke to them they were breaking a bunch of auto minis: www.minitechnique.com/I've had a few auto parts off them in the past.

My very 1st car back in '84 was an auto mini...loved it....you just need to know where to find the "sweet spot" is for the "kick down"...then it can be good fun ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Huh. I have a 1275 auto and this is the first time I've heard this... Never done a gearbox oil change (n0000000b), any advice? (Although at the current rate I get it out of the garage it will take another decade before I cover 3,000 miles!!)

All Classic Mini's share their engine and gearbox oil. so it all needs changing if it needs it ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) I tend to use 20/50 mineral oil. Mineral oil is generally the recommended oil, although there are those who swear by semi-synthetic...

I've rebuilt a couple, they aren't that hard to do and never used the special tools they mention. Got some pics somewhere

hmm, I tried semi-synth in mine once... it immediately started flaring between all gears and was not a happy bunny...

Also have a look for a Metro 1275 Auto - a few more of these around and certainly cheaper. I think the only difference may have been the inhibitor on the front of the box that came in contact with the Mini front subframe. The one litre auto was not very good, but the 1275 quite reasonable. I used to buy quite few naff ones and convert to manual using rotten cars easily available at the time. The autos always used to be nice as they tended to be low mileage and rust free.
