I am contemplating a new project, got a 20k budget and i know both are do able for the budget as I can do most of the work myself. Karmann Ghia with a Subaru turbo engine using the suburu 5 speed and box and swapping the drive direction via subarugears kit something like this guy has done linkor a volvo p1800 with a volvo t4 engine, a bit more of a straight forward swap, but still a lot of work i know. i will be using the car when its done as a daily driver and a bit of a sleeper so what are your thoughts?

After owning a P1800 and the more common 1800S make sure you get the best body you can find otherwise you will find that most of your budget can be swallowed up very quickly even if you do the work yourself. Full sills for mine (parts only) were £960 and I was quoted £1700 for each wing ! rear wheel arch repair panels were over £200 each. Whether thing have changed over the years I have no idea but a rough P1800 / 1800S is E Type money to restore. What about the Type 34 Karmann Ghia ? Paul H BTW I'd love another P1800 (mine was a Jensen built version)

Both great looking cars and should make a great project.
The Ghia is prettier. The P1800 is more unusual. Even after those sorts of modifications, the drive of either will both very characterised by the original DNA. Do you have a preference for either in standard spec? Rear engined versus front engined will always be a contrast!
People on here will just give you their personal opinion; ranging from total ignorance to first hand experience. I'm kind of in the total ignorance camp because in relaity I know little about owning either. I would do the Volvo I think. I have really started hankering after a P1800 the last couple of years. They are more handsome than beautiful, but for me, the relative rarity compared to a Ghia makes them a lot more desirable. They seem pretty welll put together, the interior has a great splash of style, and appears a lot less utilatarian than a Beetle, I mean, Ghia. They have a refined cool about them, like they don't shout too loud, but actually look better the more you look. T4 engine sounds interesting. Would the 2.4 T5 engine and 6 speed box fit? They are phenonemal. So refined, and 300bhp is available with just a remap. I think Ghias look great, but I personally find the VW modding scene a turn off. They are such a 'typical' car to buy, that people seem to have to work really hard on building something that people haven't done before. If you want to be individual, why start off with a car that isn't? This is less the case with a Ghia, than a Golf for example, but it still applies for me. Nice dilemma to have!

P1800 ES perhaps, saw the below car at a owners club meet and would look tasty with wider rear wheels and your engine swap

A boxster with a wrx engine and ghia bodywork would be awesome.
I think the ghia is a pretty car but i cant imagine they handle much better than a beetle.
I also love the look of the volvos.
Not much help any of that really lol.
