Spent the last couple of days starting to strip the XR4x4 due to rust (again) and a distinct lack of oil pressure and cam wear.
Never ended up breaking a car of my own before. It makes me sad watching it gradually die on the drive, especially after all of the time that I put into it. Lots of bits being kept however and will end up used for the XR4i I am planning on buying next, so not a total waste.

yep its certainly a shame when time catches up on a car that you've personally spent mucho blood sweat and tears fixing but at least bits of it will 'live on' in your next ride..

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

I remember stripping my rotten old Rapid that I'd owned for nearly15 years to make the Bugrat. It really was heartbreaking as that car held a lot of memories. Makes the Bugrat extra special to me though.

it makes me sad stripping favorat v.1.0 for bits. enough will live on to add a starter, battery, sensor and alternator and it'll make a great field car

Breaking and scrapping your own car is always a wrench. But I'm usually at the end of my tether with the thing at that point so I'm usually glad to see the back of it! Like you say though, it'll help keep your next one on the road, so all is not in vain!

Actually, rather than cracking "funnies" I should be asking if you`re gonna have any bits that you wont need for your `4i left over, Its not beyond the bounds for me to nip up and give you some ale vouchers for any good bits you might have?

As it stands I am keeping: Bumpers + full RS kit Rear spoiler Lights Full MFi system inc pump, injectors metereing head etc Cylinder heads (had quite a lot of work done on them) Alternator/ starter etc Brake calipers x4 Complete LSD rear end inc shocks, springs etc Wheels Full stainless exhaust RS steering wheel Quick shift gear lever Interior switches etc Tailgate struts Front prop Electric fan
Sure there are other things as well but that all springs to mind. Is there anything that you specifically need as obviously not everything from a Mk2 5 door will suit a Mk1 4i. Let me know fairly quick as hopefully the shell will be going on Saturday.

I stripped my first car - a 1303 Beetle - when it became too rotten to repair economically. Did it at the garage, they let me store it there for a week and just turn up every day and take more bits off. I think they were hoping for some leftovers but I took the works - engine/box, wheels, seats, doors, glass, all switches and instruments, gearlever, steering wheel, handbrake and pedals, bonnet and decklid, fuel tank, lights. Only left the wings on as I could see through them

Whats happening with the steering rack? Theres nothing specific I can think of right now that mine needs but it couldnt hurt to have a few bits put on one side, if you can think of anything worth taking off before the shell goes then let me know I`ll probably take it off your hands.
