T25s are very cool indeed, but prices are escalating and there's quite a few about now (there was loads at Wheels Day). Personally, I'd be looking at a Mazda E2000, Bedford Midi or Toyota HiAce as a budget alternative! These guys had a van at Wheels: www.t3tuning.co.uk/shopnew/Here's mine from a few years ago (before all the bits were available and everyone thought I was mad to do a 'late' model!): This is my favourite from Wheels Day:

what is the best engine to go for petrol or diesel, am i right in thinking they have golf parts, how do you lower these as i'm not that familiur with dubs, i'm thinkin of one to go to ireland in but i think i need something that is happy to cruise at at least 65mph
rmad, your blue one there looks loverly, wheels look good, do most 5stud golf wheels fit then, i'v been searching the net but its hard to find ifo on the t25/t3
is the 1.9 turbo diesel a watercooled golf engine?
i presume they are still a simple beast to work on

They never did a 1.9td, it was either a 1.7 n/a diesel, or a 1.6td.. same as in the old passats. The diesels are golf type blocks, the petrols are either 1.6 / 2.0 aircooled (the early ones) or 1.9 / 2.1 watercooled. (all flat 4's) If you use the diesel g/box, sump, oil pickup and engine mounts, you can fit most VW inline 4 cylinder engines to them. I've got a 2.0 petrol out an audi 80 sport in mine. They drive really nicely, mine will sit at 75/80 all day long, and a private test track saw 110... Bodywork wise check for rust! front arches go, and the cheap replacements are wibblepoo. VW had a few genuine ones left when I bought my pair off them though. Sills go too, but these are a pretty easy repair and are cheap to buy. If the sliding door runner has rusted out, leave the van well alone!!! Mine had and it was a pig to remove the old and fit another!! they're triple skinned round them and it makes it a nightmare. Lowering is courtesy of a new set of springs all round BUY THE BEST EXAMPLE YOU CAN! Wheels are 5x112mm pcd, so 5 stud golf ones don't fit. Most Passat and Audi A4 upwards do though. Merc wheels do too, although you'll need to machine the centre bore and also enlarge the stud holes, and get M12 radius M14 nuts for the merc jobbies... And a pic of mine... Mike

i'm feeling some love 2wards these now, they seem pretty good, i was looking at one this week out of being nosey really! & they are quite big inside even with all the camper bits, mike yours looks cracking in that colour!!!
its a case of just buy one as rust free as possible really then, lowering just by springs too!
i have lots of car stereo gear so would make mine a home from home i think, really comfy (as a dub van can be anyhow)
is there a model to try to go for a desireable engine! i want mine for going to visit relations in ireland & as a daily possibly,
can they tow??? as i have a very small doll i could tow my mini with, would be great for the drag strip for me if i could to my mini with it
suspension & wheel choice seems pretty easy
possible engines seem good too with the diesel gearbox/sump/oil pickup combo then
are the diesel engines slow? are there easy engine swaps? i know alot of engines can be mated to the vw gearbox's, i quite fancy one of these ya know! seem practical to me

Mine ended up with a Citroen Diesel in an effort to improve the dire economy of the 1.9 lump (even though it was a 5-speeder). Unfortunately, it made the old bus a bit of a dog to drive and I sold it before any of the problems were addressed. The next owner ironed out the bugs and fitted a Turbo'd version with vastly improved results (performance and economy) I believe!

The 1.6td is probably the best bet to go for, Mine was a 1.7 n/a diesel to start with and packed a 57bhp punch! needless to say it was brain numbingly slow! Watercooled petrols can suffer from head stud problems if they havent had the correct coolant used. Defo buy the best unrusty one you can find! It will be far far cheaper in the long run. If you're doing a lot of motorway driving, a healthy lowering and fitting a caravelle front spoiler will make a world of difference when it comes to crosswinds. I've just got a full width rock n roll bed in mine, and a shed load of stereo. Towing? Mine had dragged cars from allover the country with no sweat: Mike

I've got the 1.9 water boxer ( DG code ) in mine, they're good engines if they're not knackered, in which case - run. Doesn't seem too bad on fuel, even with the four speed box, makes a nice noise as well. Lowering is a piece of piddle, just change the springs the back took 20mins !!

LPG !!!! mate of mine has a 2.5 syncro (4x4) with LPG and it goes anywhere like sh1t off a shovel. avoid 5 speed boxes, they're awful to drive IMHO, i'm swapping mine for a 4 speed soon, can't stand the dogleg 1st gear. get over to brickyard forum for buying guide, they're big diesel fans over there, a TDi lump will go but it aint a simple transplant AFAIK. forum... www.brick-yard.co.uk/forum/default.aspall you need to know... www.brick-yard.co.uk/VehicleSpecific/T3/info/menu.htm

guz i've been looking on brickyard, a good site is that!
i must say they look top on merc or porka rims
i've seen a couple running around near where i live with nearly no rust, the only rust seems to be around the fuel filler cap area on both sides, is this easy enough to repair, arc hes & such are solis on the couple i've seen & no rusty seams, i defo need a camper converted type, it seems a half decent bus to me, alot of ppl are telling me good things

i have the watercooled boxer engine with 2,1l (95BHP) and i can only recommend it..... fuel consumption is ok, if you don't drive it like a passenger car, just use the torque and it is fine.... mine is also lowered, has a rock'n roll bed and a tow bar, what elsae do you need ;D it now has about 260.000 kms on the clock, i have it for 70.000 kms now, and i am just fill up petrol and drive... didn't even have to change the brake pads so far.... since this picture was taken, Ronal 15" wheels and chrome bumpers have been added... a friend of me bought a syncro and already did a new paint job and some other stuff : being completed after painting... and finished... it is also equipped with the rare Oettinger lowering kit, so it doesn't look like a syncro ....

Get a Westy Joker or California, they have the best interiors (but they are expensive). If you don't need a full camping interior, Bluestar, Whitestar and Redstar multivans are good overnighters If you're traveller like me buy a UK spec panel van and put an air bed in the back The only real down side to them is they can be thirsty and the cooling systems on water cooled vans can be a git sometimes.

mrj that camper you have is the type i'm after, i'm not a fan of the hightop type, i like the pop a top vans and the lower roofs like yours, very nice! good colour too
autohousedolby, i don't mind starting with a panalvan & making the inside myself, i was thinking this may be my cheaper way to get into one,
i bet the 2.1 is pretty nippy in a big bus really, a nice comfy cruiser engine

Hi All - just bumping this old thread for a bit of info. I've been looking at T25 campers, thinking of getting one (like I need another vehicle!) as I know a man with a diesel westfalia high top one for sale, but got a few questions: 1. What's the difference with a T25 and a T3? Are they just different names for the same thing? I've a lot of experience with older (air cooled) campers but not too well up on these. 2. Will the non-turbo diesel one be really disappointing to drive and make me want to fit a better engine straight away, or be alright to use for a while? I don't expect it to be quick but will it do motorway speeds if you're patient getting there? I'm used to driving standard air-cooled 1600cc Bay Windows... surely it couldn't be any slower than one of those? 3. On a right hand drive Westfalia van should the sliding door be on the driver or passenger side? I always thought passenger side like my Dad's bay window westy but this one seems to be on the other side to suit the interior setup? Will it have been LHD originally? Would it matter? 4. Are there any disadvantages to the fixed high top aside from presumably worse fuel consumption, more affected by cross winds and more difficultly parking? I know the lower roof looks better but I assume the high top is much better for insulation, less leaky and prone to coming apart than the pop up ones? 5. Any tips on what to look out for aside from rust? I'm not that bothered about the engine if it'll get me around short term as I'd hope to install something more powerful in time but don't want a time bomb on my hands... Thanks for any info - hopefully if I do get one it'll be a handy vehicle to add to the fleet, would probably have to think about getting rid of something else though...!

They're the same thing. For some reason we call them T25s but they are "officially" T3s. Rainking and I caused some serious confusion in Austria by talking to european folk about their T25s, they hadn't a clue what we were on about ;D

I thought that T25 was the official model designation, and T3 was the name that the 'dubbers on the continent assigned - simply because it followed T2.
ps. I think the Diesel is a good choice for upgrades!
