Excellent work, keen to see the progress. I've considered this conversion a few times for my Amazon. Well if your interested, I'm considering making up more looms so this conversion can be plug and play for others Thanks for the tip ferny I never thought about it bucking about I'll secure it better when we try again, maybe get the crane taking the slack so it can't topple! It was running in the MX5 not long back I just want to be sure it'll run on the chopped up loom so I know what else I can take out before I put it in (hopefully that way I can dump it in and just turn the key!

There isn't really too much you can cut to be honest. Lots runs into lots of things! I've used both fuse boxes and ECU plugs. The only things which went were the charcoal filter, heater and lights! I have a big white tub full of old wires and plugs though. I learnt a lot whilst fiddling and faffing as I'd never played with ECU's before. For instance, the clutch and gearbox switches work together to decided when the ECU will control the idle speed. Would it run without it? Dunno. A fried is coming over soon so she can help me unplug stuff and see what happens on mine if you'd like. I had planned to do that when it was in the Mazda, I just ran out of time to do it. By the way, have you got a fuel pump running there? Looks like you're going straight from the can which won't (in my head) work as you need the fuel pressure from the pump. And if your air flow meter isn't plugged in correctly it'll cut the pump, etc, etc.

We had a fuel line going to the donor Mazda fuel tank, using another battery to power it's pump and provide fuel. The can is just under the return line. We've got rid of most of the dash loom, light wiring, wiper motor, side repeaters, heater etc, and any little unnecessary plugs, but left anything we're not sure about. As you say, when it's running we can start unplugging things to see what we could do without.
Interesting what you say about the gearbox and clutch wiring, we definitely don't have these connected, although would they cause the car to provide no spark, or just make the idle a bit lumpy? We've got some studying of the loom to do for sure!

I have a bit of an update today. We weren't sure that we were causing a short in the wads of chopped light wiring and had pretty much none of the earths connected, So we began to stripping all the insulation off and pulling out the wires that had been cut. There is a little more work to do re wrapping it but here it is minus the excess... Probably it will never work again now lol. My only real worry with this is that there was one wire that had been cut that went to the fuel rail plug! And another that went to the bottom of a fuse the seemed to be for the injectors... Need to study the diagrams to make sure we haven't massively cocked up lol. Anyway I also got the first coat of red on the engine. I'm not going for immaculate, just want it to mimic the old engine really, now some dirt slapped on the sides and it's about there The last thing to be done today was cutting out a space for the new radiator. This isn't complete as I have discovered it needs to sit in too small a space so I'm going to have to use a different rad! I've taken some measurements and will pop to the scrappy and see what I can find, I need to go there to get an alternator anyway! I could use the amazon one but I'm just not sure it would be up to the job Phil tried to get the engine mounts drilled out the crossmember to put them on the engine ready to figure out they're new positions but unfortunately Volvo did a bloody good job of spot welding them down and they are just not coming out without a proper spotweld chisel, one is on order but may be a few days. Apparently they're not too easy to come by! This is my week off to work on it anyway so plenty of updates for you all this week.

My only real worry with this is that there was one wire that had been cut that went to the fuel rail plug! And another that went to the bottom of a fuse the seemed to be for the injectors... Need to study the diagrams to make sure we haven't massively cocked up lol. What colour wire? Yellow, yellow/black and white/red go to the injectors if my memory is correct. The yellow's come from the ECU and the reds back to it, depending on how much you've chopped out. If it's blue/white and black/light green it's for the coolant sensor which operates the temperature gauge. Blue comes from the ECU and then black goes back it along with the other black/light green - but not the black/green. Double check all that though! Interesting what you say about the gearbox and clutch wiring, we definitely don't have these connected, although would they cause the car to provide no spark, or just make the idle a bit lumpy? We've got some studying of the loom to do for sure! I doubt it'll stop it running, but it's worth a check! It uses the clutch pedal and gearbox switches to decide when the ECU needs to control the idle speed. I'd imagine the default is for it to be in charge, just in case a switch goes down. Might also be related to the cruise control as well as that's the circuit the brake switch also routes into.

The ones we cut was a black with a blue stripe (could have been green stripe) to the injector plug then a brown one to the fuse box. I'll have a study later and see if I can figure out which they are!

The only black/blue I can remember come from the ignition and starter motor. If you're going to use the wiring diagrams with a Haynes then ignore the god of "refit is simply the reverse..." As its black/blue diagrams are wrong! Black/green is very different to black/light green and goes to the thermostat switch, ecu and diagnostics.
Can you tell I did a lot of treble checking when I rewired mine! Have fun...

I removed the inlet manifold brace bar on my spitfire install. Really not needed and frees a lot of space up.

Some more progress was made yesterday, we mocked up the gearbox which looks like it will fit nicely, so that's a relif I got a final coat of paint on the engine so that's ready to go now we just need to get the engine mounts off the Amazon cross member which is proving difficult! Phil drilled the spot welds but without a proper spot weld chisle they are not coming free this thing is very well put together! I'm going to try and get a chisle today but if not I have one on order for Friday. We also started drilling the holes in the engine bay for all the wiring but thanks to some pants B&Q hole cutters which broke pretty quick we only managed to do 1 and a half lol The other thing we did was to install my car's 3rd fuelling system. We figured it would be cheaper to fit the MX5 tank seeing as it's already baffled and has the pump in the tank. It actually fits better in the boot of the amazon anyway so I'm quite chuffed with it! Today will be spent mostly shopping. I need enough fuel line to go down the car twice, a chisle, some hole cutters, a radiator and an alternator!

Looks as if the tank takes a lot of space in the trunk? And how do you fill it? Open trunk lid? There is filler hole on the right hand side at the back

Yeah your right I just need a pipe to connect the tank to the filler and we're away. I started P clipping the first line to the underneath of the car after we'd been shopping all day but as it turns out the drill bits I have are sodding blunt so I only managed two before I gave up, I'll get some tomorrow. On the plus side shopping went well, I now have all the bits I need bar a rad but I have figured out which one I'm having, one from a Rover 25 will fit nicely and is only £35 brand new! After I failed at drilling little holes I drilled all the big holes I need in the engine bay. I did want to paint it too but ran out of time seeing as the folks are coming round tonight.

Looks pretty much like it's sitting in a MX5 engine bay! Just with less "shelf" above the wheel arches.

Intresting you went for rubber fuel hose, any reason? Then again I replicated the MX fueling under the car and it was a pain to route.
Not saying I have done it right (probably the opposite) but I removed the Clutch wiring/Pedal Wiring when on the MX as I knew fitting the switch would be a pain, I did check on MXoC and various other sources. It's not caused an issue with idle, the only thing that did was the 4th coilpack wire.

It took me 2 hours to do that never mind trying to bend copper pipe into the correct shape lol. I also had to go over the Amazon's Axel and I thought that would be a nightmare trying to do it with hard lines. Interesting what you say about the wiring, my back up plan if this loom doesn't work will be to just get another and not cut anything out! A bit less tidy but might be the easy way out if I fail with the one I've got

I cut so much out when removing it from the car that I am surprised it works :-) To be honest I did have lots of issues so you are not alone.
