Right, so a bus decided to push past our Xantia while it was parked today and left it with a big dent. I don't *think* it'll be written off but it might be.
This got me thinking about what to do if the car is a write off. My wife (bless her!) wants to go hardcore retro and use the insurance money to put rear belts in both the Imps. Personally I think my back would give up with two small children and a three door car.
So, my question is, what to consider next? I've been into Imps for ages so I'm a bit lost. I think (according to Parkers) I could probably talk them around to £700. I'd need four doors and five seat-belts (preferably hatch or estate). It'd need to be economical(ish). It'd need to be reliable as we have family all over the country and we tend to cane our cars mercilessly up and down motorways. It'd need to have some retro interest and I'd at least need to be able to service it myself, but I'd be open to interesting J or European stuff...
Thanks in advance!
Graham

You can buy my chevette for £250, then spend the balance making it perfect. It has rear belts for the kiddies, economical and OK for motorways (but better with a C20XE/LET in it ;D ) See the FS&W board if interested. </salesman>

Triumph Acclaim
5 Doors, nippy 1.3 and J reliability. And you could get a Mint example for £700.

How about a E30 Touring BMW should pick one up for around £700. you certainly will, sold one to bruiser capri for about £200 with an MOT not long ago. and a really nice one for £500 not long after. they're brass farthing money for a 316i tourer. not fast or owt, but comparable to a 1.3 astra, 1.6 saph etc. good spares back up, quite easy to maintain yourself too. mk1 sierra would be cool. just bin the VV carb for reliability.

I'm being tempted down the XM route myself and my wife's looking at big Volvo estates - mind you I was surprised to see how cheap BMW's were. Skoda was an interesting choice too... I could buy a fleet of those!
Cheers

PS Did you get 4 door Chevettes? And I can't find any Acclaims for sale anywhere...

(Slides into salesman mode) In a similar vein to an Aclaim, how about a 2nd gen Civic? Mine has rear belts, albeit only statics, but inertias should go on the same mounts. Unfortunately it's not quite a 4 door, only having 3 but on the plus side, it does look cooler! See ad in the for sale and wanted section

Mechanic's rule #1... If the car works, anything left on the floor after you finished wasn't needed in the first place

Love the idea of something J and big and saloon like with too much chrome and seventies detailing... given that I can't find a Charmant on the net yet what else should I be idly looking for?
Cheers
