Just before Christmas I dragged a trooper from a field it had sat in for about 6 years This is it after scrubbing off the covering of green slime. Decided to use it for my youngest to learn mechanical skills. Better start off with learning how to handle the angle grinder. Cleaning the rust from the wheels ready for a coat of paint Ttfn Glenn

I bought a mini when i was 12!
Nice work with teaching him to use an angle grinder. I learned all my mechanical skills at that age by taking it to pieces but my parents would never let me near power tools, so as a result i only learned to weld and got an angle grinder when i was 18!.
For that reason, i still own said car but its still in a barn needing attention.

Thank you all, the " to do " list of jobs so far Filters, oil, cambelt, Cut out rusty bits and weld in fresh steel, Replace a duff glowplug, Fix a couple of lighting faults, Make tube bumpers for both ends, as mountings for originals have rotted away, as have the crossmembers they mount to. If it never goes back on the road, can always take it to Drumclog, a pay and play off road site, but, there's a part of me would like to see him turn up to his " prom " in an evil 4x4 he has built. If you think this is pushing things a bit, I helped restore a triumph 2000 and will be helping with an xjs for a friend with similar plans and his children haven't started school yet Ttfn Glenn

Dragged him away from PlayStation, and got another wheel painted. Emptied the spare fuel tank so now have a couple of gallons of red diesel for parts washing. Thinking of ways to ensure he dosent suffer mojo failure, currently he is into, the walking dead, so thinking a conversion into a zombie response vehicle, might be on the cards. Ttfn Glenn

A very small bit of progress, both front indicators now work, son did the taking apart then decided he wanted to disappear leaving me to do the reasembly, both sides had the same problem, the earth connections were corroded so just needed cleaning and put back together. There's still time for a bit of electrical fault finding for him, as the number plate lights don't work. Cant blame him for disappearing as he's been ill for the past 3 days so any interest is better than none Ttfn Glenn

Grabbed a bit of shed time today and decided to continue sons education by setting him up, to strip and clean the rear suspension of a friends scimitar based 1930 ERA racecar Once out he got stuck in with the angry grinder, so those two are now ready for paint, next will be the other side then the watts linkage Much more adept and confident with grinder, getting the hang of freeing off seized bolts and swinging a 3/4 drive socket set Ttfn Glenn

Good to see you teaching him to work on a proper car Does your mate have the chassis number (stamped on the OS front suspension tower) or the reg number from the donor Scim?

Yes he has the reg details, the build is on scimweb. After the trooper and the single seater build there is another scimitar in waiting, plus a beetle

Good to see more kids learning. I've been raised around cars, been going rally before I was one! My dad taught me things like this when I was younger, makes a huge difference now, plus I'm a lot closer to my dad than most people because of it. Oh, just for the sake of teaching you could get him to do a compression test and fuel pressure test, bits and bobs like that.

I agree, we build carts, motorbikes and cars inc many Landrovers with my dad, had him out in the garage today helping with my E30. I have a 5 year old and he has his own tool box and has been using the pillar drill, vice etc (all supervised and with safety equipment). We need to train them to be practical and turn their hands to things, I do anything mechanical or building related. Keep up the good work.

I have been getting my ear seriously bent with " dad can we work on the trooper ?" Unfortunately the weather has been seriously carp. To keep the mojo flowing, I had to do something, so today, off to the man cave, time to service the daily. Changing the fuel filter Draining the oil and changing filter, also changed the air filter, but no pics of that, being a modern, that's pretty much all there's to do. The trooper will provide tappets to set and an easy cambelt to change, just need it to stop raining Ttfn Glenn

Trooper now moved to mancave so hopefully work can progress without being weather dependant. Only small amount of progress so far, both bumpers pulled off, the rear one literally, only rust holding it on!!!!! The front was a bit more stubborn as one of the four mounts actually had some metal content Ttfn Glenn

Only a small amount of progress, mainly rust removal, still at brutal stage, just hitting with hammer and sweeping up what falls off, so far 4 shovels full of rust into the bin. Traced the power steering leak, the low pressure return pipe has vibrated and worn through, so hopefully a spot of weld will sort it. Bad news is, son finds PlayStation more interesting than rust at the moment. Ttfn Glenn

Since PlayStation is more fun than rust the trooper is going, but don't worry it is being replaced by something more teenager friendly ( hopefully ) plus it is something I have always had a hankering for, bucket list anyone? I'll leave this here as a clue www.marksdreamshack.com/Video-clips-and-U-tube(2841999).htmTtfn Glenn
