alolympic - I tried getting the car seat - in/out of the Golf & tbh, it's a pain - the seats don't go very far forward, so you have to manouver the seat through the gap & you have to open the doors much wider than you can in a parking space to get it in.
brendd - yeah I wanted to like the works one, as it replaced the 8 year old Mondeo - but I just don't get on with it - neither do any of my team.
What do you class as very thirsty? One of the guys in my office thinks 35mpg is poor lol. My Golf get's 200-350 miles to £67/47 Litres of Super unleaded (£64 normal petrol) - so 19-32 mpg, I have had 39.8 mpg more than once, but I was very bored by the end of the journey lol.
Has your colleage had any problems with the CRV?

I had this problem a few years back. I was running an L200 which seemed ideal for when our son was born.Leather, tinted rear Windows and a huge "boot".
Unfortunately the boot filled up with water every time it rained (the top leaked), and invariably the travel system worked its way to the front of the boot by the end of the journey which meant climbing onto the tailgate and crawling in to retrieve it from the deep end. The rear belts had to be pulled fully out to get round the rear facing child seat, which meant they would then ratchet up and lock and gradually make the seat more vertical lol.
We've been through various van type motors since - Fiesta Courier, LDV Pilot, Pug Partner, Kangoo, Townace (awesome:-) ). After the Kangoo we got a LWB A-Class late last year. Unbelievably roomy- me and my Dad are both 6'5" and he can sit behind me with room to.spare lol.
After some discussions about getting something newer for SWMBO we went to look at some later models yesterday. Looked at B-Max, C-Max, Zafira, Meriva, Picasso...etc. None really inspired me, so I suggested that as we still have the Townace for dog duties, and our kids are now 4 and 5, we can probably buy a normal car.
Pick up the replacement for the A Class next week- 59 plate E90 318D M Sport. Fairly pleased with the compromise (I was pushing for a 330D lol)
My top tips for hauling little ones: sliding doors make access so much easier-especially when the kids are big enough to open doors in car parks by themselves; check seatbelts with your car seat to make sure they'll go round; and make sure if not using isofix that the seatbelt catch (is that what they are called? The bit you click in to) doesn't come out too far for the type of seat you are using.

bigalan - thanks for that, I'm glad you said about the L200 as I had thought about them lol.
Yeah, I'm not on board with the whole people carrier thing, my mates got a Zafira - but no kids! He's getting bored of me telling him to get a propper car lol.

I had an Audi A2 with a baby. the pram fitted under the false floor in the boot which meant plenty of space left for other crud.
I now have a 2litre megane scenic and I have to be honest, it's an ace family car with pockets and cubby holes all over the place. I've even been using it like a builders van with the back seats out whilst I renovate the house. Ace car.

Wanted to go have a look at it today, slight DIY injury this morning means I'm not going out of the hsoue lol. Servicing isnt to bad on BMW's over here to be honest, parts arent alot more expensive than VW parts but if the engine or the electrics die then it would start to get expensive lol.

When I talk about running costs, I'm not talking about fuel or standard servicing, I'm talking about the non-scheduled stuff. Do your research on various websites, the E60 diesels make little sense to run without a BMW warranty and they're cost prohibitive on anything with over 60k on the clock. Everything is coded on these things so a lot of stuff needs to go to dealer/specialist and the diesels have so much to go wrong

Even new batteries need it. Think if I do go BMW, it wont be a diesel my E46 320d was curse word (engine wise). I wish I bought the E91 330i sport (manual!) I was looking at last year now.

So after all this, on Tuesday I put my money where my mouth is and bought this from an Auction unseen (As in paid for it & then saw it lol): 2006, Golf Plus 1.9tdi S. 146k on the clock but runs/drives perfect, even has FSH. Body isnt great but not fussed about that. Just heard it's passed it's MOT first time & it's now having a service & the tracking sorting. Mrs loves it & I must admit my GTI has been sat at home unused all week as I have been enjoying driving it. About £15 (ish was just above quater of a tank when I picked it up) worth of diesel has lasted me 75 miles around town, which seems to be quite decent. Number plate was a bonus & didnt realise I could make my name out of it until I got it home

bloody good choice, we have three kids and have had every possible combination of cars, from Vectra estates, to megane scenics to mazda 5 people carriers etc, but the current lineup we have serves us the best, i have a MK4 Golf, the wife has a MK5 plenty room for 5 of us (2 adults 3 kids) and my folks are in kent, both cars take us plus all our stuff in decent comfort up and down with little fuss
