	First off, I am sorry for asking this on here & please delete it if it's annoying. Ive tried looking elsewhere but generally the sites that talk about these kind of cars, arent my kind of people who enjoy taling about tire bestbefore dates & golf lol. Mrs JoeM is pregnant, so the Golf will be getting sold on & will be replaced with a sensible(ish) car/SUV thing. Looked round loads of car's on Friday (10 to be exact), the mrs wont have an estate car (she will be using it while I'm ata work) so my idea of a V70/Suby Forester/Legacy is a non starter. The 4 Favourites atm are: 2010 Golf Plus 1.6tdi bluemotion or 2007 1.9tdi (for cheapness) 2007/8 Rav 4 Diesel 2007/8 Honda CRV Diesel 2009/10 Volvo XC60 DriveE (havent had a look at these yet as they had all sold) I havent driven any yet, but judging by the size of prams & all the other stuff, I think the Golf+ will be a bit small. Seen a few cheap CRV's with over 160k on the clock, which seem tempting as it leaves me with plenty of money left over to replace the Beetle in 2015 when I need something with LPG. Anyway enough waffle, has anyone had any experience of any of these?

	the golf gti will do you fine for a few years yet unless you are planning on more than one.

	Exactly how big is your pram? I fitted all of my kid related stuff into the boot of my Merc 190e (and a Mk2 golf, a Mk3 Astra among others) with no problems at all - they do fold down y'know lol Sorry, can't help with the vehicles you've specified, although to put your mind at rest, the Golf+ will be plenty big enough (as would your current Golf, but I understand the 3 door thing, massive PITA with a kid to get in and out!). My ex-Mrs had a Mazda 3 (she had 2 kids, one of which was in a pushchair when I met her) and that had plenty of room too.

	Far cheaper to buy a specific buggy that fits into a Golf sized car, than buy something else (e.g Babyjogger City mini). We managed with a Clio fine. I remember we experienced lots of panic from other soon to be parents that they must buy a larger car. It's just panic, and unnecessary. If your wife doesn't want to drive the Golf, that is enough reason to get rid, but seriously, keep your options open. I would personally keep your current car. Once the little one is born, then you will know more about your actual needs, rather than what middle England tells you what you need. Congrats by the way! Now post a cool pic of a car and stand at ease....

	I'm another one saying that you don't need a gigantic car because you have a baby... You're still you after you become someone's Dad and you still deserve a decent car. We had an IS200 with it's notoriously tiny boot and tiny boot lid opening when our boy came along. Our massive buggy system thingy went in and out okay and we got to keep our nice posh Lexus. As time went on, we dipped a toe in having a second motor and got a Seat Arosa. Again, there was never an occasion where the buggy and the baby seat and the baby and the driver couldn't all get in, though rear seat passengers were a no-no. If your special lady friend won't drive your current Golf then will she drive a Golf Plus? I thought the boot area in the RAV4 was really disappointing given the exterior dimensions. Same for the Freelander and A4 Avant, which aren't on your list but will be in budget. I've had them as rentals not as my own car and I was never short of boot space but just thought they'd be bigger inside.

	Congrats . I would agree with the rest in saying that the Golf would be fine. You should try fitting a Pram into an E39 BMW 5 Series! Ok it has rear doors but you could not even fit a body into the back of the E39 saloon, let alone pushchair (Fear not, Golfs are a little roomier ).

	When my son was born we had a Hillman Imp ! When daughter was born 12 years later there was me, wife, son plus associated baby "kit" in a MKIII Capri. A Golf, even a 3 door, would have been spacious compared to what we managed (without trouble) in. Paul H

	Thanks chaps, this is the said pram (travel system thingy) I wouldnt be worried about the size of the car if all our family lived local, but they don't lol. I mean my dad coped with a Mk1 Fezzy when I was born. My concern is "we" fill the Golf's boot with just the 2 of us when we visit anyone for the weekend, I'm also clueless when it comes to children & the thought of trying to play tetris getting everything in the boot while looking after a child scares the curse word out of me. Plus my brother in law, bought a brand new Focus 6 months ago when his son was born & admits he should have bought the estate. I had a look at the XC60 (which sadly had gone when I got there), A4 Avant, Freelander, CRV, Rav4, Kuga, Passat Estate, Golf+, Grand Vitara & Tiguan. Only reason she wont drive the Golf is it scares her lol, if I was to keep the Golf I would swap it for the 5dr Gti & be happy. 	Mmmm. That buggy could be a problem. With that, you're going to need a much bigger boat! Do you have to have that one? (that's kind of a rhetorical question, because you don't, it looks ridiculously poorly designed for transportation). You need to get a buggy that has removable wheels, and when folded will sit up against the rear seats end of the boot. You should still then have plenty of room in the boot. If you already fill the boot for a weekend, maybe you are different to I but I wouldn't give in yet. If you must have more space, and still want a swift package, Skoda Octavia VRS is pretty hard to beat, but without knowing more of you're requirements, that is just guessing what your needs are. MPG? Performance? Make preference? Budget?

	This is what I had in my head as a daddy wagon, but wife doesnt agree.. We havent bought a buggy yet, spent all day yesterday trying them & the ones I could fold up cost as much as my first car, we have been looking at the newer (but 2nd hand) version of the above one, as it comes with everything you would ever need to transport a mini me. I'm not to fussed about the performance, just needs to be safe & Mrs approved as she's going to be using it more than me & I will be getting something interesting when I get rid of the Beetle for something with LPG (purely for free parking, MPG is not a concern) MPG - not sure Performance - not a priority with this one Make - Mrs is very picky - defo not a Skoda, Volvo, Subaru or anything french, or people carrierish - seriously it's mainly just what I looked at lol. Budget - Upto £8k as thats what I should get for the Golf. Also, thanks for the help guys!

	I've looked at nearly everything in the modern stuff. C-Crosser/Outlaw/4008 are in my top list but not quite rugged enough to replace my Discovery and still retaining 2 4x4's and the Auris seems a bit daft when were trying to get down to normal car a 4x4 and a toy.
	Some days you just need to take a grinder to an inanimate object, just to make your day a tiny bit better!!

	We used a decent high end car seat then a quinny frame that it clicked into as a pram, you don't have to wake them up when you get them in and out that way. Was safe and practical, didn't feel the need for a huge travel system that does every thing. Once they are old enough to sit up etc the quinny turned into a good push chair for town and what not. We even made do with a cinquecento as a borrowed car for a bit after a prang lol. We are up to a four door megane 2 now but the lad is 7 and we have a dog as well. Certainly don't need anything bigger in my opinion.

	We have an A2 as the family car - our Silver Cross surf is big and does fill the boot - we put it in upright on its side rather than flat like you've shown in photos so try that way too. (Although A2 boot is more upright) We can fit various change bags etc in and around the buggy and for holidays we bought a thule experience 828 roof cage. Obviously a roof box would do same job. Only pain really is weekly shop has to go on seats rather than in boot but that's what Internet shopping was invented for. A 3 door would be a pita but any 5 door mid to large hatch will do the job. As much as I love estates! And enjoy it!

	Sorry just to add - when I was running my 3 door Cuore (size of a k11 Micra) up until recently I took my son and all the gubbins to my moms a few times and it all fitted okay without passengers apart from baby in car seat. PS shouldn't this thread be full if acronyms and abbreviations like on mumsnet?!

	No offence but it sounds like your Mrs is being very limiting with what you can choose, which is going to end up costing more money - money that could be better spent on the little one! If you want a ridiculously practical car that isn't massive - Honda Jazz Best bang for buck that meets your requirements is probably a Mk3 hatchback Mondeo, and you'll have lots of cash left over. If you can allow Skoda onto the list, the Octavia has a ridiculously big boot, it's 100% worth considering and there is nothing wrong with owning a Skoda these days.

	take the badges off the skoda, she wont know the difference to the golf! the MK2 is a decent motor, same platform as the golf so you'll be familiar with it, but it has an that'll take the buggy a little better I guess (bro inlaw had one) friend of mine had a 306, and the boot looks much better than any era golf, due to its compact torsion bar rear end, 307 is rather poor here unless you get an SW. he's had a Volvo since as well, as he needed something decent for carrying work stiff, and it was a good car whilst the T5 behaved (not that often...) Bruce ( mysterymachine ) has one now.

	Since buying the Fabia my wife only wants Skoda's from now on (we used to have an Estelle before eldest born). Octavia would be a good choice - after all it's popular with taxi drivers so must have decent boot capacity. Although smaller a Fabia estate could be worth considering as well - our 1.4 TDi is quick yet cheap to tax and gives amazing economy. Paul H

	SLAP!!! now take a breath. My best mate and her partner have a mk3 Golf and travelled from Southend in Essex to Cambridge to stay with her parents over Christmas, a total of 5 days and 4 nights. They managed fine with the pair of them and their 3 month old son. The Golf is plenty big enough for the 3 of you and all your stuff. If it really isn't get a roof rack/box for when you need a bit more storage. The golf, regardless of model is about as sensible a car as you can get in terms of practicality, you just pick the model for the performance you want/can afford. I think you're just panicking over nothing.

	Thanks for all the suggestions guys, keep them coming, it's all new to me this stuff. The problem is, she hates most the car's I like & I hate the ones she suggests - she wants something like a normal Golf or Golf+ & I find anything other than a Gti or R32 mind numbingly boring - ive had ordinary sensible car's before & ended up hating or braking them in under a year. Haha, I tried getting her to have a Jazz, never happening - we looked at one earlier this year - I loved it, she made me a deal - If I saw 2 people under 40 driving one in 2 days she would have one - thats 9 months ago & I have seen 1 person who looked under 40 lol. I'm sorry, but Skoda's a no go, we have a 2 year old Octivia (from new) estate as a pool car at work & it doesnt compare to a VW - I actually upset the guy that ordered it (didnt know it was him) when I gave him a lift in it & spent the entire journey slagging it off, I actually prefer to take the Hiace. She wont drive a big car if she's low down, she used to drive my e36 coupe fine but she's being funny about this. I probably missed an important bit off the reason for the bigger car, dog + mother-in-law for the trips to reading.
