MASSIVE EDIT!
There's been loads of changes since the original ad so here is a fresh write up!
Pics first:
1980 Porsche 924 Series 1 Turbo.
These are very rare cars, and wildly different from the standard 924 2.0.
I'm not sure how many Turbos are still alive and kicking in the UK but it can't be many.
I like to think this one is particularly special.
It is a series one turbo which has the more robust dogleg transmission and no problematic digital ignition system to worry about!
It also has no sunroof which means it is stiffer and there is no sunroof-associated issues such as leaks etc.
Specification as follows:
- Carrera GT bodykit including lightweight GRP front wings
- Carrera GTS flush headlamp conversion
- Genuine 15" Fuchs lightweight forged alloy wheels (7J front, 8J rear shod with Fulda Y2000 tyres)
- Porsche scripted doorcards
- Half velour pinstripe tombstone manually adjustable seats
- Black headlining
- Lightweight carpets (black)
- Rear "+2" seats professionally removed and area carpeted (rear seats included in the sale)
- Porsche 951 intercooler from a 944 Turbo (as per Carrera GT)
- Upgraded complete heater assembly from a 944
- Air conditioning professionally removed (weight saving)
- Rear wiper and associated wiring professionally removed
- Recent service including plugs, distributor, timing adjusted, etc
- Recent brake discs, pads and braided hoses (drilled discs and EBC green stuff pads)
- Recent replacement Porsche steering column sleeve bearing
- Brand new Bosch battery
- A very good service history file
- Usual 924 Turbo spec, electric windows etc
- New dash with no cracks or damage
- New windshield
- No rust
- Tidy bodywork
- Roughly 75,000 miles
- 6 months tax
- 12 months MOT
As you can see from the pictures, this car looks stunning.
People have commented on the fact that it is a sensible ride height and it not "uber low". I'm not into lowering cars and to me this adds purpose and looks nice and aggressive - Coupled with the beautiful forged Fuchs wheels, it has a great retro look and a kind of "period fast road" charm about it. In my opinion it's a proper old school Porsche.
Overall it drives really nicely and goes very well, with nothing in particular to worry about. The engine temperature, voltage and oil pressure are all healthy and there are no nasty knocks, clunks or bangs.
The huge 951 intercooler (which is shoehorned in behind the vented nosecone) boosts the performance significantly... Coupled with the reduced weight from the lightweight carpets, bodywork and rear seat removal it is a pretty fun drive although you do have to have your wits about you, especially in the wet!
This car is all business. It is 34 years old now and has a very old school/agricultural feel about it with no power steering, no ABS, no modern day creature comforts!
The cockpit ergonomics are very well balanced with everything you need in easy reach and view. The boot is huge! The upgraded 944 heater works very well and the seats are fantastically cosseting so it is actually a nice place to be on the open road or on a long journey despite being wildly different to anything modern... These were built as grand tourers and still do exactly what Porsche intended all these years later!
In summary this 924 Turbo is generally very tidy and well looked after, however it is an old car therefore there are a few marks here and there on the body (the worse being crazing around the hood scoop). It is galvanised and rust free. The paintwork has a great shine and lustre and there is nothing in particular which lets it down in this department.
This car is a lovely thing, it's reasonable on fuel, cheap to insure and drives well. It's very sharp looking and not tired like many neglected examples you see gracing unkempt driveways. It's in constant use and hasn't been sat round in the damp for months on end.
The car always gets admiring glances wherever she roams which is nice!
Any questions please ask! I fancy a 928 next and would be up for a trade involving one.
I would also consider a 70s/80s Italian coupe such as a Montecarlo, Alfa GTV, Fiat X1/9, Lancia Delta/Gamma. Actually, if you've got anything interesting try me! Coupes and roadsters only, and I'm not interested in anything newer than 91/92
Viewings welcome, I dry store this car in a secure, clean and dry subterranean garage with strip lighting so night/wet weather viewings are no issue, you'll be able to look at the car in the warm/dry/light regardless of the time of day.
Overseas buyers welcome, I am happy to meet at an airport or assist with transportation/delivery if necessary!
Thanks for reading, please let me know if you have any questions!
