I've got a car with a not particularly interesting registration (prefix, two numbers, three common letters) that a couple of online brokers have suggested they'll give me £300 for.
I've been to the DVLA and seen about getting the plate on retention, which I guess is the proper way of doing it. Anyone got any advice about the best way (if the proper way isn't the best way) and any pitfalls or expenses I can avoid?
The car in question is a nice W124 that seems to have had the plate on it since it was very new but I'm thinking about selling it so I'm removing the plate to get the dosh. Yeah, I'm dead tight...

Brokers don't give you anything, they'll chuck it on their website where it will sit for years till someone with an obscure name and several black head screws will offer you £80 for it.

This is exactly what I found out as well. I had one valued at £1500 only to have them ring me up saying they had a customer willing to pay something like £200 ! Just put it on eBay with buyer paying all transfer costs but don't be surprised if you just get offers of 99p - seriously. Neighbour paid £80 for a number that matched his initials and paid £80 INCLUDING transfer fee so seller actually got nothing for it. Paul H

Lovely. That being the case, if it's been on the car for 23 years then it can stay on it.
Thanks guys.

Gotta agree with the other comments, unless the plate is something special you can put it on retention which costs £25 a year with the hope of selling it later but otherwise don't bother as it is a lot of hassle.

I have an '89 300e saloon and a '92 E320 estate, both autos. The estate is nearly 180k but the saloon mileage is about the same as yours. I took this photo a couple of weeks ago in the saloon. Is this photo too gigantic for the form?
